When a composer is related to a major artist in the field of music, their import and even some of their works become subsumed via assumptions in the direction of the more noted musician. This happened with some of the works of Fanny Mendelssohn. She composed numerous works for piano and voice and at least six of her songs were attributed to Felix. However, Fanny's compositions clearly demonstrate that she was quite a gifted musician. An excellent pianist and composer Fanny's stylings were comparable to those of her brother. She kept a meticulous diary and corresponded regular with her family. Her writings provide a replete source of biographical information on the people involved in her life. She received early musical instruction from her mother and Marie Bigot and studied piano with Berger and composition with Zelter. By the age of thirteen she was noted for having memorized the entire content of Bach's "Well-Tempered Clavier." Between 1839 and 1840 Fanny traveled throughout Italy visiting Milan, Venice, Naples and Genoa in the company of her husband and her son. Fanny Mendelssohn composed in a number of genres including oratorios, cantatas, dramatic scenes and piano works.
