Flamingo Gunfight
The genre of Rock music has inspired countless artists over the years, Blistering with energy and insight, Flamingo Gunfight captures the spirit, attitude, and explosiveness that launched modern rock into it’s third trimester in the mid to late 90’s. Musically the group captures a sense of excitement devoid of anything trite or gimmicky. Following in the footsteps of bands like Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Unwritten Law, as well as Tom Petty, Smashing Pumpkins, and Queens of the Stone Age, Flamingo Gunfight is the type of band that pops as much for its melodic sensibilities, as for its against the grain change it up attitude. “When we work out our songs it’s a game of sorts” says Cory “every song has it’s own rules depending on the artists or songs that have influenced it. Instead of being inspired by our selves, as some bands are, we are inspired by the things we hear our peers and idols play that we love. And then ask our selves how would we write a song with their mindset behind it. Every song has it’s own design. And that’s the sort of thing that keeps us fresh and new” The bands unique beginnings leading up to its public EP release 3 years later has been nothing short of coincidental. Formed in college during their semesters at the Academy of Art University. Ian and Jake two best friends since grade school happened upon Cory at a party. With in weeks of meeting they began writing and playing together, Making a hobby out of the first year and a half it wasn’t until the lack of prospects in their love-long careers in illustration and film, did it begin to wane on Ian and Cory “ we just found ourselves skipping class” says Ian “ and spending more and more time behind the computer with pro tools, churning out song after song in my old apartment” In the summer of 2006 the band began snowballing towards success. With the addition of Ian's younger brother Sean plucked strait out of high school his approach to guitars added fresh new flare, now grounding the band with a four man line up. There was so much support from all friends and family but none so much as Ian’s uncle, who signed on as band manager in June of 06. He instantly began shaping and preparing the boys for what was to come. Near the end of August while interning at a local recording studio, Cory handed off their demo with 17 tracks to renowned recording engineer Matt Kelley, known for his pioneering work in hip hop. “ So I took the CD home and figured I’d find one or two songs worth recording, but I swear to you I must have listened to that CD for over 4 hours strait! I really wanted to work with these guys!!” Matt took the band under his wing and gave them a lot of insight into the business, and in the process became an important friend as well as a colleague. The band has maintained this reputation for being professional as well as a surprisingly fun and exciting group of guys to be around, their unity is only strengthened by all of the relationships they’ve formed with the people around them.” These guys work their asses off, and I can only imagine the things that we are all going to see from them in the future, honestly one of the best investments I’ve made in a long time” – Jay Hard (band manager)
