Free Music Quintet

An entirely descriptively named group, the Free Music Quintet recorded one album for ESP-Disk in 1968. The quintet included reedsman Peter van der Locht, trumpeter Boy Raaymakers, violinist Erwin Somer, and bassist Ferdy Rikkers, all of whom doubled on percussion, and was led by Dutch percussionist Pierre Courbois, whose list of credits by that time already included sessions and shows with John Coltrane, Kenny Clarke, Bud Powell, Lol Coxhill, Johnny Griffin, and Mal Waldron. The resulting album is one of the most uncompromising free jazz outings ever recorded. Although the full quintet never recorded together again, Courbois continued working in various incarnations with most of the other members. ~ Stewart Mason, All Music Guide
