Gayle Young

Canadian modern composer and performer Gayle Young is known not only for her compositions, but also for her musical invention (the amaranth), for her use of unusual tunings, and as the editor of Musicworks magazine. She has created sound sculptures and music since the late '70s and, in 1980, built the amaranth, a 24-stringed instrument with a moveable bridge (she had previously designed another microtonal instrument called the Columbine). In addition to this, she has composed for installations by sculptor Reinhard Eaitzenstein, performed in the Test Tubes, and authored a biography of Canadian composer and scientist Hugh LeCaine. ~ Joslyn Layne, All Music Guide
