kimoscio's Album Review for No Other

Clark faded deeper into obscurity...
It seems that every organization is ruled by a finite number of unknowns. The Catholic Church has the Society of Jesus, American democracy has a roundtable of corporate sponsors, and alternative country-folk music has Gram Parsons and Gene Clark. It is a sad fact that most people will scratch their heads and ask themselves "Gene who?" But this is the reality of music--there is just too much for people to know. Gene Clark occupies the realms of the musical unknown, but with the grave-digging trend that has unearthed Nick Drake, Clark is sure to have his posthumous day in the sun--and for good reason. Upon its release No Other was considered an ostentatious exercise in studio excesses. It was panned by critics and was subsequently buried in the collections of audiophiles. Ironically, Fleetwood Mac would appropriate Gene Clark's sound with their popular mid-'70s albums Fleetwood Mac and Rumors, while Clark faded deeper into obscurity. Highlighting any one track on No Other is useless, as this masterpiece requires a thorough listen. But if you need a sample or two try "Silver Raven," and the epic "Some Misunderstanding."
