Genesis Gospel Singers

Hank Williams-style country music provides the melodic setting for the spiritual songs and hymns of the Genesis Gospel Singers. Performing songs from a wide range of religious denominations, the Genesis Gospel Singers have been welcomed in churches throughout Canada. The Genesis Gospel Singers represent the musical vision of Rev. Glenn Small, who began serving as rector for Cox's Cove/McIver's Parish in September 1992. Small envisioned a group that would tour from church to church offering a more contemporary style of music. Initially a sextet, featuring Tony and Joan Oxford, Allen and Renee Park, Robert House and Gordon Payne, the Genesis Gospel Singers have performed as a quintet since 1993 when Robert House was replaced by the Oxford's fifteen year old daughter, April, on bass, and Renee Park moved to St. John's to attend college.. The members of the Genesis Gospel Singers come from various denominations. Allen Park, a carpenter, and Payne, a refrigeration engineer, are Anglican. Joan Oxford, a self-described "domestic engineer", is Roman Catholic.Tony Oxford, a school administrator, is Salvation Army. April, a student at Sir Wilfred Grenfell College in Cornerbrook, has combined the religious beliefs of her parents. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide
