Genevieve Donaldson
From her beginnings as a trip-pop vocalist and songwriter back in 2001, Genevieve Donaldson has come a long way. The need to make music has led her from pop, to hip-hop, rock, r’n’b, jazz, cabaret, and most recently, country. Her achievements to date include consecutive Honors Awards in The Great American Song Contest (The Little Things, 2003; Red Letter, 2004), showcasing at Crown Showrooms and Tony Starr’s Kitten Club, radio airplay and interviews in Bendigo and Brunswick, shopping centre shows, a library showcase, and being selected as a participant in the first FReeZA Mentorship Program in 2005. Although trying country as a genre in recent years, her only success in it to date has come from feedback and a small fanbase in the USA. Although trying hard to break through in Australia, she found that her accent, and a decidedly pop-rock approach to country music, did not work in her favour. She left the genre outright in late 2007, to concentrate on new music projects, and rework her sound both vocally and instrumentally. The Australian bluegrass scene grabbed her at a jam night. She is currently the lead vocalist for the band Appalachian Heaven, who approached her in 2006 at the Harrietville Bluegrass Convention. Joining a progressive metal band was the last thing on Donaldson’s mind when she was making some ‘vocalist wanted’ posters for a friend’s band. But after months of searching, they listened to the songs on her myspace, and a tryout was arranged. Something ‘clicked’ both with her vocals and the band personalities, and Genevieve Donaldson is now the lead vocalist and lyricist for a new band in progressive metal. Similar to bands Evanescence and Within Temptation, the band is focused, talented, and determined to succeed. Alongside being a musician, Donaldson is also a qualified graphic designer, a career path she plans to continue alongside her music. Her website now functions primarily as a design website, with outside links to her music, like this MP3.com profile.
