The nucleus of Go-Go Market is the collaboration between married couple Chuck Prophet and Stephanie Finch. Prophet is primarily known to music fans as the guitarist for the now-defunct roots rockers (and Paisley Underground scenesters) Green On Red, a seminal '80s group that, along with groups such as the Long Ryders and Jason & the Scorchers, anticipated the alt-country explosion of the '90s. Charles Prophet IV was born in middle class Southern California in 1963. He joined Green On Red in the mid-'80s, his incendiary guitar work balancing out the organs/synthesizers of Chris Cacavas, who had dominated the group's sound. When Green On Red dissolved in the early '90s, Prophet set up roots in San Francisco, a move that would lead to the creation of Go Go Market. Once entrenched in the city, he became involved in weekly jam sessions at a Mission District club called the Albion. Joining Prophet were singer-songwriters Mark Eitzel, Patrick Winningham and Stephen Yerkey. Most importantly, however, Prophet met his future wife and Go Go Market collaborator Stephanie Finch at the Albion sessions. On Prophet's subsequent solo albums, Finch became an integral vocal presence. In Go Go Market, however, Finch's singing is front and center, and the group's 2002 debut, Hotel San Jose (produced by Prophet and released on Innerstate Records), allowed Chuck to indulge his burgeoning interest in studio wizardry and club music. The married couple wrote the tracks for the album with songwriter Kurt Lipschutz (a.k.a klipschutz), and employed the turntable skills of Mark "Ill Media" Reitman (who has also worked with Tom Waits). ~ Erik Hage, All Music Guide
