Gottfried Herrmann

Having studied the violin with his father, the piano with Seebach and the organ with Muhling Herrmann was afforded the opportunity to receive tuition free violin lessons from Spohr and composition and theory with Hauptmann. He became the first violinist for The Hanover Hofkapelle and by 1829 Herrmann had entered the Frankfurt am Main orchestra. Later in Lubeck he became acquainted with such virtuoso perfromers as Ole Bull, Loewe, Liszt and Clara Wieck. Herrmann was best known for his playing abilities and his own compositions reflect the influence of Spohr and Beethoven. The "First Symphony" by Herrmann anticipates portions of the music of Wagner And Brahms, and was considered on the same level as the compositions of Mendelssohn and Schumann. ~ Keith Johnson, All Music Guide
