Grainne Ryan
BIO The beautiful thing about music is its ability to carry the listener through an endless array of eras and emotions. Thats it's allure, it's universal appeal. Grainne (pronounced grawn-ya) Ryan is a Canadian singer/songwriter who has developed her natural gift for music into that raw form and with her voice and her fingertips she captures the beauty of life, as well as its sorrows. Music critic, Leo Katestaart (Alt-country.nl) says, Grainne "adds a very substantial personal touch to comparisons such as Lucinda Williams, Sarah Harmer and Aimee Mann as well as influences like Joni Mitchell, Janis Joplin and the The Be Good Tanyas". In rural Ontario, Grainne was born the youngest of five children, into a family made up of generations of musicians. Her mother and father (a singer / classical music and opera enthusiast) were born and raised in Southern Ireland. Grainne, along with her older siblings, is gifted with a natural ability for music. She grew up listening to everything from Irish reels to AC/DC. "I've been a songwriter my whole life" she says. Before Grainne entered Kindergarten, she was creating her own songs and had already recorded her first cover song. A short but sweet version of The Beatles' song Baby You Can Drive My Car, is now somewhere in her mother's safe keeping. Grainne's songs are made up of strong memorable melodies, lots of hooks and lyrics that are smart and easy to relate to. With her crisp, clear and "undeniably unique"* voice, she sings of matters of the heart, the mind and the world outside. Things that won't change and things that can. She has the rare ability to create songs that are different yet familiar. Songs that touch not only on the state of the individual but the state of society. At the end of July 2006, Grainne travelled with drummer Corey Richardson, to New York City. They drove out in the scourching hot 45 degree (celsius) weather, in a little dark car with no air-conditioning and it was well worth it. There they performed at two of the city's hot spots (pardon the pun). At the Rockwood Music Hall she, along with her friends, Chris Brown on a Baby Grand Piano & Corey Richardson on Drums, she performed for Harris Radio's 4th Anniversary Party. They also played at The Living Room, with Chris Brown on the Hammond and NYC's Teddy Kumpel on guitar. She was well received by her neighbours to the south and is planning on touring the U.S. more extensively this year. Grainne's debut solo album, entitled All The Money (2007) is already attracting international attention from the UK, The Netherlands, Belgium, and the United States. Backing Grainne on this album are some top-notch Canadian and American musicians: Chris Brown on many types of keys (The Citizen's Band, The Bourbon Tabernacle Choir, Broken Social Scene , Bare Naked Ladies); Jason Mercer on bass and banjo (Ani DFranco, Ron Sexsmith)and the amazing guitar and pedal steel sounds of NYC's Drew Glackin (The Silos, The Jack Grace Band, Crash Test Dummies, Tandy). Singer/songwriter, Ana Egge, who was recently on tour with The Be Good Tanyas, also helped out on this project by blessing it with her beautiful voice and haunting harmonies. The album was produced by Chris "Lurch" Rudyk at Broadcast Lane Studios in Toronto and New York City. "Lurch" has worked with **** such as The Guess Who, Blackie and The Rodeo Kings, Chris Brown and Kate Fenner, Fred Eaglesmith and Great Big Sea. Grainne also loves to paint and akin to Joni Mitchell, she provided all of the artwork for her latest project. Amongst the collage of paintings inside the CD jacket, there is a photograph of this unique artist, at the age of three, composing one of her first songs.
