Greg West
In the 70's I was influenced by two diametrically opposed influences: John Fahey and Robert Fripp. How one manages to merge those two influences has been the story of my music ever since.
Fahey was the father of fingerstyle guitar. Everyone from Leo Kottke to Michael Hedges owes Fahey. Before he came along, acoustic guitar was for bluegrass. Fahey embodied a reverence for the past that didn't bog down future exploration.
Robert Fripp was always ahead of his time. Beginning with the ambient album "Evening Star," Fripp collaborated with Brian Eno to pioneer a whole new way to play the guitar. Using tape loops and later, digital equipment, Fripp created a way that a single guitarist could create improvisations that were compositional and orchestral in scope.
My current work includes both acoustic and electric guitar in solo formats, occasionally using long digital delays to create ambient textures and ensembles.
