J-88

In July 2000, shortly after Slum Village released its long-awaited Fantastic, Vol. 2 album, the Detroit-based hip-hop trio released some of their older material on the brief album Best Kept Secret. Clocking at less than 30 minutes, filled out with some remixes, and attributed to the one-off moniker J-88, Best Kept Secret features leftover material from Slum Village's storied and heavily bootlegged, yet never released, Fantastic, Vol. 1 album. Fans of early Slum Village and particularly then-producer Jay Dee should find the J-88 material enlightening, as it sheds light upon precisely why the Detroit trio (then comprised also of Baatin and T3) garnered such hype leading up to their summer 2000 official debut. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide
