Respectfully known as the "king and queen of the Ghazal world," husband and wife duo Jagjit and Chitra Singh created some of the most successful Indian music of the 1970s and '80s. Their 1976 album, The Unforgettables, continues to hold the record for most album sales in India. Trained by Ustad Jamal Kahn, Jagjit Singh was the first musician to set Urdu poetry to the accompaniment of a full orchestra. A native of Sri Ganganagar, Rajasthan, India, on February 8, 1941, Singh built his reputation on his musical interpretations of the poetry of Sudasthan Fakir Chitra Singh, who sang with her husband for nearly three decades until she withdrew from music following the death of their son, Vivek, in a tragic auto accident in 1993. Their final album together, Someone Somewhere, was released in 1994. Although he continued as a soloist, Jagjit's focus turned to interpreting the darker lyrics of Javed Akhtar, Gulzar Saab, and Nida Fazli. He remains committed to using music to aid social causes. His song "Cry for Cry" was used to raise funds for Child Relief and You, while profits from his tune Love Is Blind were donated to the Blind Association of India.
