Jay Scott Berry
Universally recognized as one of the finest magicians of the late 20th century, Jay Scott Berry expanded his reach beyond magic and also made a name for himself as both a lecturer and a musician. Much like his lectures, his music is very informed by his magic performances, derived as it is from the new age style. Berry employs many of the more popular new age motifs as well as its sound. His albums revolve around particular themes and concepts, most of which involve some sort of mystic element. While his magic is surely his main draw, Berry's ambient, synthesizer-heavy music serves as a welcome brand extension and furthered his iconic status in the magic community.
Beginning at the age of five, Berry participated in local plays and musicals, devoting much of his early age to the theater. Having been born in 1960, he became the youngest magician ever to appear at Hollywood's well-known magician showcase Magic Castle in the '70s. By the '80s, he rose to the top of the industry and began preforming stage shows around the world and was featured on dozens of television progams as well.
As Berry's name equity grew and grew, he smartly began extending his reach, beginning first with performances for private and trade shows hosted by major comporations like Apple and Nissan, in addition to working closely with major public figures like Michael Jackson and Bette Midler. His first steps into music began in the early '80s when he composed soundtracks to accompany his stage shows. 1990 saw his first official CD release, Symphony of Light, an album which exceded most expecations. Two years later after having basked in his unprecedented success as a muscian, Berry returned with Concept for a Dream and teamed up with Mayr. His third album, Sun Dance, didn't depart too far from Concept for a Dream, essentially sticking with a winning formula. ~ Jason Birchmeier, All Music Guide
