Johann Ernst (Prince of Weimar)
This Weimarian prince, who only lived for nineteen, years was respected by such contemporary composers as J.S. Bach, Telemann, Walther and Mattheson. He was taught by the court musician Eilenstein and was in direct contact with Bach between 1708 and 1715 while Bach served as organist to the Weimar court. Johann studied at the University of Utrecht and composed at least nineteen instrumental pieces before his death. They were published posthumously by Telemann and included "Six concerts a un Violin concertant." Four concertos were written in three movements, two in four movements, four in minor keys and two in major keys. Johann's music provided the basis for six of Bach's own keyboard concertos. ~ Keith Johnson, All Music Guide
