John Burton
An English composer of vocal works -- 12 canzonetts - and instrumental scores including 16 sonatas and a concerto. It was thought that Burton was the first Englishman to employ the word "harpsichord" in the title of one of his works ("Ten Sonatas for the Harpsichord, Organ or Piano-forte"). It is also probable that Burton was one of the first Englishmen to become familiar with the fortepiano. The music of Burton apparently supports this as he was quite free in the context of the use of dynamics (they should be used) but quite specific regarding their place in a given composition (in the musical offering this is where and how I [Burton] want them used). ~ Keith Johnson, All Music Guide
