John Garth

Little is known of this composer's life. He was probably an organist at Sedgefield and did not compose anything with innovatory skill. He followed the lead of Avison when he would double the harpsichord part with the strings or give the strings a rest. These characteristics can be found in Garth's trio sonata for two violins, a cello and harpsichord. Primarily his sonatas were written in two movements; the initial movement was fast, followed by a minuet. His music was honest and humble, clearly written, lively and flowing. The substantial compositions were essentially written for the cello rather than strings or harspichord and demonstrated a melodic character surpassing the sometimes trite air of his other concertos. ~ Keith Johnson, All Music Guide
