Musically Hingeston's name first appears as a member of the choir in York Minster in 1618. It is fairly certain that he was a student of Orlando Gibbons, a teacher of John Blow and an overseer to Henry Ourcell's apprenticeship. Hingeston served in the court of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell, and in the court after the Restoration. He was a viol player, in charge of instruments -- responsible for the manufacture, maintenance, repair and presentation of the instruments -- and a deputy marshall. The majority of his compositions were in the genres of fantasias and dances with violins and viols, an organ voluntary, and some instrumental works for cornet and sackbut (trombone). ~ Keith Johnson, All Music Guide
