Joseph Aloys Schmittbauer
This German composer's greatest claim to fame can be found in his conducting, extension of the range of the glass harmonic, and his mass for the Dreikonigfest of 1776 in Cologne. Schmittbaur was an harpsichordist, Konzertmeister, Kapellmeister and Oberkapellmeister who served for the Rastatt court, the Karlsruhe court, and in Cologne. Many of his works show the influence of other composers like the serenatas "L'isola disabitat" and "Endymion" which respectively reflect Jommelli and Gluck and his six quartets for flute and strings which were originally attributed to Haydn. ~ Keith Johnson, All Music Guide
