K3N

1975, in Springfield, Missouri, the idea for a band was born... but first, a dorm was reborn. Out of the ashes of Dorm 69 at old E.U., the reigning dynasty of social misfits was reembodied in Krause 3rd North, or K3N for short. The dean of students referred to K3N as "those punks" which we adopted as a label to wear with rebel pride. Because the school had hair length limits for males, we tried other unconvertional adaptations such as spiking short hair to stand straight up. Today it is hard to imagine, but such things were NOT the norm back in the mid 1970s. In 1975 a changing band comprised of JiMi RoYaL pRiCkEtT and Tommy Gun Hughes of NW FISH + ~whoever~ started wailing wherever and whenever they could find an audience. By 1977, Ted Sullivan Naja had become a permanent fixture in the band that would now be called K3N. It should be noted that the concepts of "K3N" and "Free Sound" were ubiquitous and interconnected in a good many respects. K3N was, and remains, both a dorm and band. Free Sound was name to both a band and a radio show. A good many young dudes belonged to any or all of the possible combinations at one time. Besides JiMi and Ted, a few notables in terms of the music included (in alphabetical order) Brent Browning, Doug Cosner, Neal Cunningham, Victor Davis, Joe Hoyer, Tommy 'Gun' Hughes, Paul Logsdon, Mark Muirhead, Chris Willadson and Stephen Yake. JiMi, Ted and Victor moved K3N to Iowa in 1980, and broke up by the end of the year. Drummer Andy Claude joined JiMi and Ted for the 2000 K3N rebirth. Trish and Cory Lark joined in 2001. Our friend Gary Bland filled in on the drums from 2005 to 2007, during Andy's educational sabbatical.
