Las Golondrinas Viajeras

Not to be confused with the all-female mariachi group in El Paso, TX, Belize band Las Golondrinas Viajeras were performing traditional Mexican music when documented on a field recording made by Enrique Ramírez de Arellano and Eduardo Llerenas in the mid-'80s. At that time, the group members were lead singer Emilia "Doña Mina" Alvarez de Fuentes; vocalists Santos Alvarez, Magdalena López, Benito Suazo, and Mario Marínez, who also plays a turtle shell; Julián Martínez on turtle shells; Cristobal Martínez on bass drum; Ezequiel Castillo on treble drum; and Román Witey, who plays a rattle known as a sisira. Their performance of the song "Busigan" ("Shame") appears on a few world music compilations, including Voices of Forgotten Worlds. ~ Joslyn Layne, All Music Guide
