Laura Hubert

Born in the Toronto suburb of Downsview, Laura Hubert was always attracted to music but never considered it a potential career. After performing in various stage productions at Lawrence Heights Junior High School, including the role of Buttercup in Gilbert and Sullivan's HMS Pinafore, she continued throughout high school. At the same time, she grew up listening to Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt and Billie Holiday among others. Upon graduating from high school in Toronto, Hubert enrolled in the University of Toronto. Her goal was to study sociology and psychology and work with special needs and autistic children. But throughout her university career, she kept shining on stage. Hubert worked at Toronto's Factory Theatre in productions of "Threepenny Opera" and "The Revenger's Tragedy". After university she toured across Canada in various stage productions. While working in the late eighties at Toronto's Theatre Direct, Hubert met Pat Langner and Jack Nicholsen, both musicians. Taking lead vocals, the trio would rehearse as often as they could. After being booked for a show at Toronto's Harbourfront Centre as part of the World Stage Festival, the trio practiced in an area of Toronto known as Leslie Spit to perfect six songs. From there, the Leslie Spit Treeo was formed. The group released four albums and were nominated for various Juno Awards, but disbanded in the late nineties. After breaking up, Hubert met longtime friend and jazz pianist Peter Hill. The duo began working on jazz classics and pop standards. It was enough for Hubert to catch her second musical wind. In 2000 she released her solo debut album My Girlish Ways. Performing in various local and national jazz festival, Hubert released Live At The Rex in 2002 on Girlish Days Records. ~ Jason MacNeil, All Music Guide
