Lennon on the Boombox
Lennon was born on 8 February 1984 of Italian parents and lived most of his life abroad. He spent five years in Wuppertal (Germany) until he moved to his grandparents’ house in Sardinia (the isle between Italy, Spain and Tunisia). The more he grew, the more he needed to express himself by singing and dancing, initially for his relatives only and then, gradually experiencing the stage and its ups and downs. He cast his ego aside for a while, dedicating his youth to studying although this make-believe world caused him difficult and unpleasant situations. When he was eighteen, he decided to move to Heiligenhafen (Germany) definitively. Since he wanted to attend college at the University of Sardinia, he thought it was great to spend summers in northern Germany. He attended some german classes in Hamburg where he lived near the local biggest music shop. Here he spares his time and money to increase his musical knowledge: The Beatles, Otis Redding, The Rolling Stones, The Velvet Underground and some motown anthologies. He started writing songs since he was thirteen years-old and, until now he has written around 300 songs. In February 2007 he created his account on MySpace but only later, on June 13th he uploaded his first demos: catchy staccato-rhythm “The Great Reward”; rocky tune “Twice Forgive (And Once You Leave)” with its 80’s aftertaste; Inner City (his dedication to motown music) and last but not least, “AC/DC Love” (with its ambiguous lyrics). “The Great Reward” eventually peaked at 1 on the Rocksteady Chart for three non-consecutive weeks and spending an entire month in top10; it also reached 1 on mp3.com R&B/Soul/Urban Chart ahead of r&b colossi Rihanna, Ne-Yo and J.Lo. Due to the decent success and being lyrically praised, the song alone gained more than 3 000 downloads in the web entering the overall chart on Mp3.com at 12. “AC/DC Love” charted at 3 on the Funk Chart and figured on several websites, also reaching 8 on Mp3.com. Inner City and Twice Forgive (Live Mix) peaked respectively at 8 and 6 giving Lennon four top10 songs on MusicDownload and three top10 songs on Mp3.com. In October 2007 digital record label Zoomoozik has given Lennon a chance to work with them. In only a few months Lennon has achieved great popularity as an independent online artist (around 10 000 streams and downloads in four months) and this is the reason why he decided to take a break before recording his first album “Beauty is in the eye of the beholder”, a session of electro-pop songs inspired by r&b/urban sounds and by the new wave scene. All song were written and composed by Lennon. “Why Do You Jostle About So?” and “The Reason Why” are the most representative. Other songs are “Bounce”, “Southern Cross”, “Beth” and “Sand In My Hands” a song originally written during the “Beautiful Haze” era and reworked in order to make it less reggae. “Southern Cross” is the English version of the song “Estrellas” and part of a short story called “North: 52° parallel” both written by Lennon himself. In early October Lennon has recorded his brand new song, a r&b-oriented acoustic ballad called “Leaving” he successfully performed live during an intimate gig last year. This song is a Christmas gift to all his supporters and friends and the first brand new one Lennon has chosen, to christen his deal with Zoomoozik.
