Mae Chisholm is a keyboardist who played piano and organ on many gospel records cut in New York City in the '50s and early '60s. Sometimes she also recorded organ solos that were included on compilation releases with titles such as World Famous Love Songs. Neither of these activities are the types of projects that ensure a performer's lasting memory; in fact, Chisholm was lucky to get credited at all, and usually didn't. This means a great deal of her work has vanished into a discographical netherworld, but there is no denying that she helped create a sound and style that is in some way imitated whenever an organist sits down to testify, whether preceding a sermon or a baseball game. Some typical recording sessions involving Chisholm that researchers know about were her recordings with the vocalist Dardanelle Hadley, who was often credited as just plain Dardanelle. This singer often collaborated with Harold Turner, who like Chisholm was an excellent keyboardist. Nonetheless, Chisholm's name is scribbled in by producer Joe Davis as a participant on the original recording logs to a 1957 session, material from which was released on the album Hymns of Faith. Davis was also one of the first producers to explore the concept of a budget line of releases. He started up an imprint called Celebrity, perhaps because none of the artists were, or could ever hope to be, celebrities when their material was selling at a buck a pop on discs in which they sometimes went completely uncredited.
