Ultimate? Hardly. If you're unfamiliar with the gutter mogul/rapper {$Master P} you are much better off starting with {@Priority}'s 2005 release {^The Best of Master P}, which focuses on his glory days with his original {@No Limit} label and with his original {@No Limit} soldiers. When people talk about {$P}, that's the era they're most likely referring to, but {@Koch}'s {^The Ultimate Master P} stills serves a purpose. Compiling the best tracks off three so-so albums -- {$P}'s {^Good Side, Bad Side} and {^Ghetto Bill} along with his group {$Tru}'s release {^The Truth} -- {^The Ultimate} saves the curious from having to waste time or money for a taste of {$P}'s {@Koch}-affiliated imprint, {@The New No Limit}. While {&"Act a Fool"} and {&"Who Them Boyz"} are welcome thugging reminders of the good old days, and {&"I Need Dubs"} is a clever and fun take on {$LL Cool J}'s {&"I Need Love,"} little else reaches these heights as {$P} often sounds overly desperate and downright embarrassing when he tries to kick it like {$Lil Jon}, {$T.I.}, or any of the other Southern hip-hoppers who were much more relevant when these tracks were dropped. The compilation would be better off if it had a few more albums to pull from, and including an unreleased remix or maybe some liner notes would have made it feel a lot less sleazy. Check it if you want to hear what {$P} was up to in 2004 and 2005 without spending too much cheese, but don't fall for any "Ultimate" hype thrown on this semi-useful set. With all his reinventions and rebirths, it can be one step forward, two steps back with {$Master P}, but the gutter {^Living Legend: Certified D-Boy} is a confusing sidestep. Ignoring the five or so monikers he's grabbed in between, the very minimal liner notes read "I went from Ice Cream Man to Cookie Monster," but they might as well say, "{$Young Jeezy} was pulling in some serious paper rapping about cocaine dealing, so I'm doing it again and as vicious as ever despite my kid working for {@Nickelodeon}." A stripped-down ode to dealing with a {$David Banner}-style loop, {&"Cookie Money"} is the best of the lot and would be equaled by {&"Score Money"} if it weren't for {$P}'s ridiculous declaration "I refuse to go out like f*ckin' {$Ray Charles}" as if he's found a cure for liver cancer. Even worse is the despicable intro to {&"Ridin Dirty"} where {$P} lies to the police about an uncle killed by Hurricane Katrina just to get away with the drugs undiscovered. Writing the man off after that misstep would be easy if half the album didn't convincingly recall the irresponsible thrill of his grimy early days. Then there's the production skills of {$Myke Diesel} and {$Drumma Boy}, who still work hard for {$P} despite the man's indifference to coming up with anything fresh himself. Lyrically, {$Jeezy}'s influence is everywhere where the {$G-Unit}-flavored beefing and gunshot sound effects aren't, but with hard, stripped-down street beats and a shorter than usual track list, the blueprint for the next great {$Master P} release is in here somewhere. It's so hidden by {$P}'s carbon-copy posturing that only hardcore fans need be excited while everyone else can keep on ignoring. ~ David Jeffries, All Music Guide

You'd have to be a die-hard {@No Limit} soldier of the highest degree to deny that {$Master P}'s output has been spotty. He's mainly a singles artist with the occasional satisfying album, a man who seems more concerned with flooding the market as much as he can, as quickly as he can, and with as many side projects as possible. That's why his well-chosen {^Best Of} is a desirable addition to his overstuffed catalog, saving CD buyers from emptying their wallets to catch the one or two -- sometimes three -- ghetto classics from his full-lengths. The early, West Coast years are missing as is everything post-2000, but it's just as well because what's represented here is his golden age, and if there were anything else added, the collection wouldn't sound as tight as it does. From signature tracks like {&"Bout It, Bout It II"} and {&"Make 'Em Say Ugh"} to numbers that never quite crawled out of the hood, {^Best Of} keeps things moving by sequencing the tracks in a way that makes sense. Bangers are upfront while four melancholy tracks close the affair, bringing the listener down from all the sleazy thug music. A couple memorable tracks are missing (the great {&"Weed & Money"} for example) but not enough that it harms this overview. The most beautiful thing about the collection is that a {$Master P} newcomer could listen to this in total, think of {$P} as top-notch, and be totally befuddled by his weak reputation.
