{$Oasis} played its first London concert in November 1993 at a modest club, {~the Powerhaus}. In late 1995, the group returned to the capital, performing two nights at {~Earls Court} before 60,000 fans. Intercut with interviews and featuring 17 tracks -- primarily from {^Definitely Maybe} and {^(What's the Story) Morning Glory?} -- {^There and Then} compiles footage from those 1995 shows, as well as performances taped in 1996 at one of {$Oasis}' two huge concerts at {~Maine Road} in Manchester. The latter were particularly significant, marking {$Oasis}' triumphant homecoming after relentless touring (including five visits to America in just over a year). The {~Maine Road} performances of {&"Acquiesce"} and massive sing-alongs like {&"Some Might Say"} give viewers a vivid sense of the historical moment when {$Oasis} was at the height of its powers and had conquered the music world. The {~Earls Court} material is no less compelling, from {$Noel Gallagher}'s solo acoustic rendering of {&"Morning Glory"} to the full-band version of {&"Champagne Supernova."} "If you want a circus, go to the circus. I can't jump about when I'm trying to sing songs," {$Liam Gallagher} once said in response to criticism of {$Oasis}' low-key stage presence. But a curious paradox foregrounded by this video is the band's ability to be electrifying while apparently doing very little. Still, the {~Earls Court} section includes some brilliant showmanship. Despite the {$Gallaghers}' claims to being bigger than {$the Beatles}, they share the stage with that group -- in a manner of speaking at least -- as they're joined by legendary Fab Four imitators {$the Bootleg Beatles} (in Sgt. Pepper regalia) for a rousing rendition of {&"I Am the Walrus."} {^There and Then} captures {$Oasis} in all its swaggering, anthemic glory, living up to the hype and justifying every ounce of the band's storied arrogance. ~ Wilson Neate, All Music Guide

If {^Definitely Maybe} was an unintentional concept album about wanting to be a {\rock & roll} star, {^(What's the Story) Morning Glory?} is what happens after the dreams come true. {$Oasis} turns in a relatively introspective second record, filled with big, gorgeous {\ballads} instead of ripping {\rockers}. Unlike {^Definitely Maybe}, the production on {^Morning Glory} is varied enough to handle the range in emotions; instead of drowning everything with amplifiers turned up to 12, there are strings, keyboards, and harmonicas. This expanded production helps give {$Noel Gallagher}'s sweeping melodies an emotional resonance that he occasionally can't convey lyrically. However, that is far from a fatal flaw; {$Gallagher}'s lyrics work best in fragments, where the images catch in your mind and grow, thanks to the music. {$Gallagher} may be guilty of some borrowing, or even plagiarism, but he uses the familiar riffs as building blocks. This is where his genius lies: He's a thief and doesn't have many original thoughts, but as a {\pop/rock} melodicist he's pretty much without peer. Likewise, as musicians, {$Oasis} are hardly innovators, yet they have a majestic grandeur in their sound that makes {\ballads} like {&"Wonderwall"} or {\rockers} like {&"Some Might Say"} positively transcendent. {$Alan White} does add authority to the rhythm section, but the most noticeable change is in {$Liam Gallagher}. His voice sneered throughout {^Definitely Maybe}, but on {^Morning Glory} his singing has become more textured and skillful. He gives the lyric in the raging title track a hint of regret, is sympathetic on {&"Wonderwall,"} defiant on {&"Some Might Say,"} and humorous on {&"She's Electric,"} a bawdy rewrite of {&"Digsy's Diner."} It might not have the immediate impact of {^Definitely Maybe}, but {^Morning Glory} is just as exciting and compulsively listenable. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Following the April 1994 release of the first single, {&"Supersonic,"} {$Oasis}' rise to pop stardom was meteoric. Within 12 months, the band had achieved phenomenal success, touring the U.S. twice, chalking up four more hit singles, and releasing {^Definitely Maybe}, the fastest-selling debut album in British music history. Filmed at {~Southend Cliffs Pavillion} in April 1995, shortly after the completion of the group's second U.S. tour and a week before {&"Some Might Say"} entered the U.K. singles chart at number one, {^Live by the Sea} captures one of the last performances by the original {$Oasis} lineup with drummer {$Tony McCarroll}, who left the band two weeks later. While the visual style of {$Oasis}' 1996 concert film, {^There and Then}, is seamless and polished, on {^Live by the Sea} director {$Nigel Dick} takes a different approach. Using footage of the group shot from head-height in the audience, close-ups, quick pans, multiple angles, and artfully shaky camera work, {$Dick} communicates in a more immediate and vivid fashion the concert atmosphere and the thrill and energy generated by {$Oasis} in performance. The majority of the tracks featured on {^Live by the Sea} are from {^Definitely Maybe}, with {&"Slide Away,"} {&"Supersonic,"} and {&"Live Forever"} receiving superior treatment and attesting to the band's live prowess. Most memorable, however, are renditions of B-sides from the period like {&"Acquiesce"} and {&"Headshrinker,"} which best encapsulate the quintessential {$Oasis} sound: {$Liam Gallagher}'s inimitable nasal vocals, driving guitars, and hooky choruses. While {$Noel Gallagher}'s weaker, solo acoustic interlude is salvaged by a version of {&"Talk Tonight,"} the set closes on a high note as the group delivers a noisy, epic reworking of {&"I Am the Walrus."} {^Live by the Sea} finds {$Oasis} in peak form and conveys the excitement surrounding the band that would be king of {\Brit-pop}. ~ Wilson Neate, All Music Guide
