The Old 97's have exited the power pop interstate for the alt country side road, a potholed strip of tar on which they were most comfortable to begin with. Not that it's all hayseed and honky-tonks on Drag It Up--"The New Kid," for one, pops powerfully, albeit much more shambolically than anything on the previous few records. Yup.
