Orville Dorp

Politically incorrect, foot-stomping cannabis evangelism -- that's Orville Dorp in a nutshell. A Vancouver, BC quintet (Smilin' Jack Smith, Tom Lavin, Glen Hendrickson, Al Jacobs, and Shelly Kantrow), these guys held a refreshingly irreverent attitude towards pop music, knowing full well that their freshman effort -- the EP single, Orville Dorp Sings "Jesus Marijuana" and Other Old Favorites (O.D. Records), would be their last. Four-fifths of the band are seen frolicking beneath hemp leaves on the picture sleeve. Inside the jacket, the pot-inspired madness continues. Two 33 1/3 tracks grace side one -- Smith's "Jesus Marijuana" and Lavin's "Gutter Rat Man" -- while the latter cut reappears at 45 rpm on side two. Improbably, "Jesus Marijuana" turns out to be a well-crafted folk tune -- an engaging ditty with hilarious lyrics. The disc's actual availability? It was offered for sale in High Times magazine, but outside Vancouver, it enjoyed a limited distribution. Fortunately, it was resurrected on the Vancouver Record Collector's Association 1983 compilation History of Vancouver Rock and Roll, Volume 3. Seek and ye shall find it there. Addendum: Glen Hendrickson also did stints with Vancouver bands Mock Duck and United Empire Loyalists. ~ Stansted Montfichet, All Music Guide
