Padeirinho
Composer of "Vão Acabar Com a Praça Onze" and "Cavaco Emprestado" (recorded by Paulinho daViola), and having songs recorded by Nara Leão, Germano Matias, Jamelão, Quarteto em Cy, Eliana Pittman, Noite Ilustrada, and Isaurinha Garcia, Padeirinho had success with "Cuidado, Menina" (with Ismael Bautista), "Rio, Carnaval dos Carnavais" (with Moacir da Silva/Nilton Russo, 1971), "O Grande Presidente," and "A Mais Querida" (recorded by himself for the 1974 LP História das Escolas de Samba: Mangueira). In 1975, Leci Brandão recorded "A Mais Querida" on her Antes Que Eu Volte a Ser Nada; in 1980, Beth Carvalho recorded "Salve a Mangueira" (with Quincas do Cavaco) on her Na Fonte.
Padeirinho started to write sambas at 12 at the Mangueira hill. In 1947, he was invited to join the Ala de Compositores (Composers' Wing) of the Mangueira samba school upon the presentation of his "Mangueira Desceu Pra Cantar." His first recorded song was "Mora no Assunto" (with Joaquim dos Santos) by Jamelão in 1950. In 1956, he wrote the samba-enredo "O Grande Presidente," which Mangueira paraded to in that year. The samba was re-recorded by Carvalho in 1989 on her eponymous LP and by Jamelão (A Voz do Samba), Mestre Marçal (Sambas-Enredo de Todos os Tempos, 1993), and Martinho da Vila (Samba Enredo, 1980). Also, with Joaquim dos Santos, Padeirinho wrote "Fofoca no Morro" (1961) and "Vida de Operário" (1965). Having participated in historic samba performances with Nelson Cavaquinho, Dalmo Castello, and Paulinho da Viola, Padeirinho was invited to perform in the legendary show O Samba Pede Passagem at the Opinião theater (Rio).
His best-known sambas are "Favela" (with Jorge Pessanha), "Linguagem de Morro" (with Ferreira dos Santos), and "Como Será o Ano 2000?" "Favela" was recorded by Jards Macalé, Nara Leão, and Quarteto em Cy. "Linguagem do Morro" was recorded by João Nogueira, Carvalho, and Jamelão. "Como Será o Ano 2000?" was recorded by João Nogueira and Nara Leão. The three songs also appear on Chico Buarque de Mangueira with Cristina Buarque ("Favela"), João Nogueira ("Linguagem do Morro"), and Buarque/Carlinhos Vergueiro ("Como Será o Ano 2000?"), while Germano Matias recorded "Zé da Pinga," "Conselho de Coroa," "Não é da Bahia" (with Jorge Costa), "Doutor no Samba," "Terreiro em Itacuruçá," "Vou Ficar Devagar" (with Nelson Pechincha), "A situação do Escurinho" (twice: on his 1957 Germano Matias, o Sambista Diferente and on the album shared with Gilberto Gil, Antologia do Samba-Choro, 1978). Emílio Santiago recorded "Cavaco Emprestado," Leci Brandão "A Mais Querida," Elza Soares the samba-enredo "Rio, Carnaval dos Carnavais," Jorginho do Império "Esta Saudade" (with Jorginho Peçanha), Mestre Marçal "Andarilho" and "A Nova Mangueira," Clementina de Jesus "Me Dá o Meu Boné," Jorge Aragão "Cavaco," Carvalho "Salve a Mangueira" (RCA/1981), Zezé Motta "Atividade," Candeia "Já Curei Minha Dor," Xangô da Mangueira "Zé Cansado," and the Velha Guarda da Mangueira "Amargura." His first album as an interpreter was recorded in 1987, but he died the same year, two months after his spouse of more than 40 years, Mida. ~ Alvaro Neder, All Music Guide
