Eastern harmonies and southern lights

Synopsis of 'Eastern harmonies and Southern lights.'

A dear friend of mine had returned from Singapore from his work about two to three months ago and in speaking to me he mentioned how awful the trip was. Not only was he in a land not very suitable for Americans, not only was he given presents of large mosquitoes and cock roaches and not only was he being ripped off by everyone there it seemed, but most of all he missed his friends. He noted that he saw a book that reminded him of me, Thoreau's 'Walden'. He bought the hand me down book for me and when he handed it to me there was a small voice in my head that said: "I can't believe this" This book has been such a determining factor in my personal life and personal philosophy on how I was going to live my life." I started to reread it and again just like the first time it came in waves. It was almost like looking in the mirror becoming ten years younger. I can remember walking threw the woods in the back of my house reading such works of Emerson and Thoreau. I could feel a calm come over me in those days. Back then I opened my eyes and senses to the flux in the nature around me. 15 years later I can make the light of my revelation become the precipitous fulcrum that will always circumnavigate my heart and mind. The most loquacious manner of these centrifugal thought patterns would come from Emerson's Divinity School Address:

'Meantime, whilst the doors of the temple stand open, night and day, before every man, and the oracles of this truth cease never, it is guarded by one stern condition; this, namely; it is an intuition. It cannot be received at second hand. Truly speaking, it is not instruction, but provocation, that I can receive from another soul. What he announces, I must find true in me, or wholly reject; and on his word, or as his second, be he who he may, I can accept nothing. On the contrary, the absence of this primary faith is the presence of degradation. As is the flood so is the ebb. Let this faith depart, and the very words it spake, and the things it made, become false and hurtful. Then falls the church, the state, art, letters, life. The doctrine of the divine nature being forgotten, a sickness infects and dwarfs the constitution. Once man was all; now he is an appendage, a nuisance. And because the indwelling Supreme Spirit cannot wholly be got rid of, the doctrine of it suffers this perversion, that the divine nature is attributed to one or two persons, and denied to all the rest, and denied with fury. The doctrine of inspiration is lost; the base doctrine of the majority of voices, usurps the place of the doctrine of the soul. Miracles, prophecy, poetry; the ideal life, the holy life, exist as ancient history merely; they are not in the belief, nor in the aspiration of society; but, when suggested, seem ridiculous. Life is comic or pitiful, as soon as the high ends of being fade out of sight, and man becomes near-sighted, and can only attend to what addresses the senses.'

How do we get to this desert world? When do we reach that mathematical reality where our tears that are shed from pain are greater in number than those shed from joy? It is only when we lose something of the greatest magnanimity can we understand the therapeutic and rehabilitative nature of losing a part of your being. We must allow this part of the spirit to sever it's self from us in order to grow and help others to grow along with us in hope that we can reach this precipice of understanding and finally knowing what and who we are. Out of reach? Out of reach. The one aspect to this comes from animate and inanimate parts of one's life. We have the capability to store our memories onto disks and bits of information without weathering. We have for the time being been able to hold our memories as if a set of keys or an old baseball not giving liberation to them. You see it has happened to everyone. You have a memory that does not fall victim to restoration, you and you alone are responsible for its longevity. When it comes to that case the heart and spirit must work together to download if you will, this said memory. You can taste it now. You feel the warmth of that day. You feel the kiss you were given. Your Skin tingles with love. The last line of 'The love song of J. Alfred Prufrock' States it best:

'We have lingered in the chambers of the sea

By sea-girls wreathed with seaweed red and brown

Till human voices wake us, and we drown.'

This album, simply put is about when one loses an intrinsic, spiritual value, he or she must learn to adapt to that loss and grow to reach enlightenment. The fact is we need to suffer. Spinoza can be one hook to hang onto but it is not as exact as his method of suffering. What needs to deliberated in this stage of loss is; are we truly alone when we suffer? Is it natural to isolate our self's from love when we suffer? Does love help when we suffer? Is suffering biologically necessary? Where do we learn how to suffer? No man or woman can say they needed company to heal from the pain only. There is a stage in suffering when we isolate our self's from the world, and within that moment, the patina from our world begins to show its cracks. It can equivalent to how our very earth and nature her self heals. The land becomes scorched by fire and for years the land stays dormant and infertile but it is actually the antithesis of that state. When the universe is in repair it is shedding its skin and building again making it's self stronger. We can not define the mystery; we can only know its presence. I hope this work can give greater light to the mystery of human despair and how we use it to grow into better beings. I would like to thank my beautiful girlfriend Julianne, my dear friends Jimmy, Eric, Joe and so many more. I would like to thank my colleges for there master abilities and shared vision. My father who I know is always by my side and Brother Francis of Assisi. May this work heal wounds, give light where there is darkness and give comfort where there is pain.
