Kixtan27's Album Review for Songs for the Deaf

Over-rated? I think not
RooCH_ToTB would have us bleive that this is not a good album, however, when slamming a band as he did, its good to get the facts straight. Brant Bjork was NOT the lead singer for Kyuss, where QOTSA frontman Johs Homme first came onto the Scene. John Garcia was the lead singer for Kyuss and is now in a band called Unida and was on the most recent Crystal Method CD. Brant Bjork was the Drummer for Kyuss. Then he goes on to say how Homme is mixing too many styles and not focusing enough on his band, and that side projects and QOTSA bleed together. Well hes right, sort of. Hanging Tree, from SFtD, was originally a Desert Sessions song written by Alain Johannes (Eleven, Chris Cornell Band, Misson Imposilbe 2 Soundstack) and Ex-Screaming Trees frontamn Mark Lanegan. Avon and Monsters in the Parasol, from the fisrt 2 albums respectively, were also desert sessions tunes, but RooCH_ToTB claims to have enjoyed these albums, but not SftD, because Homme collaborates in too many side projects? Now what Desert Sessions is basicly a bunch of artists, both underground and mainstream, that come together, and in 2 weeks, write and record an album. If anything Hommes being in several projects not only says someting about him being dedicated to his craft, but gives a wider range of style to bring to the table. This is done quite nicely on Songs for the Deaf, which incorperates punk, metal, alternative and classical music into a nice little package. Quite simply, there is a lot going on in this record, certainly a lot more than many of the bands of today could ever dream of contributing to music, even in a sumation of their whole carrer.
QOTSA, no matter the line up, fronted by Josh Homme, is a testament to what music should be; a precious gift for the soul.
