Electropire's Album Review for The Understanding
""
Northern magic
I wasn't really a big fan of Röyksopp before this album. Sure I've heard their only other album 'Melody A.M.' (and I like it), but it seemed like they had painted themselves into a corner. How could they continue their level of production quality and at the same time preserve the sensitive, elegant, and experimental style? Not that I know everyone's potential, but it seemed too unique to continue without turning out less interesting.
Until I heard 'The Understanding' that is. The opening was strange and positively suprising, and that's exactly what they're aiming for. Continued through to the end is a brilliance and clean production that gave me the chills again and again. Seamingly chaotic beats are made beautiful, smooth, and driving. Every layer seems meaningful and fitting, still suprising at every corner. Parts of it may not be very original at first glance, but the sensibility and production quality easily makes up for that. The often whispering vocals sound unpretencious and are always fitting. It all comes together very nicely.
I've heard most good electronic music, all the way back to the 70's (maybe earlier? Not sure when Kraftwerk or Neu made their first 'klangs'). I've tried producing electronic music. I love music over anything, and I feel like this album is made for me. This is the first time I've felt that way about any music.
I remember thinking "what would this sound like if I did'nt know what house music is, or if I didn't view electronic music as incredibly complex and great tool for expressing emotions?" Maybe the album would'nt make sense to me? I have a feeling that you need to have attempted to produce electronic music, or understand exactly what it takes to produce new AND good electronic music in 2005, to truly appreciate 'The Understanding'.
What röyksopp did with 'The Understanding', is reward people who know what it's all about. It would be a shame if this album don't sell better than their first one though. Because it's much better, even IF most people can't tell the difference..
