Sam-Ang Sam
The musical traditions of Cambodia have been brought to the United States by ethnomusicologist and quadruple-reed shawm player Sam-Ang Sam. A member of the Pin Peat Ensemble from 1988 to 1992, Sam has continued to explore traditional Khmer dance music with the Sam-Ang Sam Ensemble. Sam trained on the shawm, an oboe-like instrument, in his homeland before emigrating to the United States in the late-1970s. The recipient of a MacArthur fellowship, Sam currently works with ethnomusicologist and Javanese court gamelan musician Karl Signell and Chad McDaniels on web pages and in-depth CD-ROM presentations of Cambodian performance arts. ~ Craig Harris, All Music Guide
