Sandro

Argentinean pop balladist Sandro was born Roberto Sánchez in August 19, 1945. His passion for music came when he was a child, loving to imitate the king of rock, Elvis Presley. In 1960, Sandro formed his first band, called Trio Azul. When Agustín Mónaco left that act, it became a short-term duet called los Caribes. Soon after, the singer was participating in los Caniches de Oklahoma, later named los del Fuego. Sandro's first solo single, "¿A Esto Llamas Amor?," was released in 1963, followed by los del Fuego's single "Hay Mucha Agitación." The artist's breakthrough came in 1967 when Sandro came in first place at a Buenos Aires' festival, singing his song "Quiero Llenarme de Ti." Soon the singer was reaching the most important venues, such as New York's Madison Square Garden in 1970. Clearness of his growing popularity came in 1971 when Sandro performed in front of 60,000 people at San Lorenzo's stadium. Sandro's acting skills allowed him to play starring roles in 16 movies and a popular Puerto Rican soap opera called Fue Sin Querer. ~ Drago Bonacich, All Music Guide
