Subgrav
SubGrav began in 1994 at the height of the techno/rave craze in the united states. Early experimentation with computer-based composition yielded some interesting results. The idea rose from the embers of burning kafka, an earlier project that borrowed as heavily from the heady Manc 'baggy' scene of the "happy mondays" as it did from the dark sounds of "frontline assembly." The short lived project saw only one obscure release on cassette, as well as a short film done entirely using a fisher price camera. The name 'subliminal gravity' was borrowed from an idea by croc.shop frontman mick hale, followed quickly by the name of the first album, taken this time from a small piece of paper - a torn, partial article - with the words 'no high ambient tripping'. Although the phrase belongs to telephony, the sentiment echoed the project's desire to keep a dance floor moving and distance itself from the emerging ambient/chill scene. Although the project created several demos and numerous remixes for other artists, the album 'no high ambient tripping' was not released until 2000 through the online site mp3.com. Even with minimal marketing, the cd sold a good number of copies as the buzz spread word-of-mouth. Individual tracks that found themselves onto the uk's 'vitaminic' site charted in the electronic section for being popular downloads. 2006 saw the release of the latest release, tokyo.
