By effortlessly inhabiting the styles of bachata, bolero, son, and merengue, Dominican Republic native Super Uba has proven himself more than capable of fusing traditional Latin music with the contemporary sounds of worldbeat. Born Ubaldo Cabrera in the rural town of Guateque de la Isabela, Uba learned to sing and play guitar when he went to live with his uncle in the city of Santiago. He played with numerous trios and bands throughout the town before moving to New York City in 1995, eventually settling down in Brooklyn. Accompanied by the guitar playing of his longtime friend, master of bachata Edilio Paredes, Super Uba released Tierra Lejana in November 2003 on Laso Records. ~ James Christopher Monger, All Music Guide
