alichino's Artist Review for Temple of the Dog

Best of Show
In the wake of death, that is Andy Wood's death from Mother Love Bone, was born a collaboration between two of the more famous in the Seattle sound: Soundgarden and Pearl Jam and some of the founding members of Mother Love Bone. And although some of the other songs on this album are must more orientated toward the ‘style’ that Mother Love Bone was trying to imbibe, it is Call Me Dog that strikes me as the most poetic piece.
It is a simple song about sadness and disappointment where the we find a singer telling his lover to simply call him a dog for his behavior, only we realize that even though his lover may do so he never will.
It starts slow, clean with a young and highly charged vocal style from Chris Cornell, ready to confess just how ‘low’ he is, but the chorus brings the song to life, slow, but electric, warning the lover that bad luck will follow.
Interesting to note that if Temple of the DOG is a word play on church and religion…then what might Call me a Dog really metaphorically represent? This is question for the poet and his lyrics, but something to think about.
