The Cucumbers
Basically a duo of Jon Fried and Deena Shoskes (both of whom strum and sing), the Cucumbers came out of America's indie-rock underground in the early '80s, showing an affection for infectious jangle-pop overlaid with lyrics speaking of romantic uncertainty. After recording an EP for the Fake Doom label in 1983, the group released their first album, Who Betrays Me...And Other Happier Songs, two years later. A self-titled LP in 1987 revealed a growing maturity -- not especially welcome, given the Cucumbers' appeal -- and the group were silent for over seven years before recording Where We Sleep Tonight in 1994. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide
