The Devil's Disciples

The Devil's Disciples were a faceless British Invasion-era band that played for about a year before disbanding. Well, they weren't exactly faceless: guitarist Peter Banks would go on to join Yes in a few years, while rhythm guitarist Dennis Cowan joined the Bonzo Dog Band in the late '60s. In the family tree included in Banks' Can I Play You Something? CD, comprised largely of odds and ends from his pre-Yes bands, he writes that the band spent three months in Hamburg and recorded a single around late 1964. It is uncertain from his notes whether that single came out, though Can I Play You Something? does contain two demo-sounding tracks by the Devil's Disciples. These are routine, unimaginative covers of Arthur Alexander's "You Better Move On" and the Yardbirds' "For Your Love"; it's uncertain whether those might be the numbers that were recorded for the projected or officially released Devil's Disciples single. And it's also worth noting that this version of "For Your Love" is unlikely to have been done in late 1964, since the Yardbirds didn't have a hit with it until early 1965. ~ Richie Unterberger, All Music Guide
