The Mastersounds
Vibraphonist Buddy Montgomery and electric bassist Monk Montgomery (1921-1982) came together to form the Mastersounds (a melodic and easy listening bop group) with pianist Richie Crabtree and drummer Benny Barth in 1957. The band caught on for a few years, cutting ten records in four years for Pacific Jazz, World Pacific, and Fantasy. Wes Montgomery appeared on one of their 1958 albums, a set of songs from the play Kismet. After the group disbanded in 1961, they had a brief reunion in 1965. The two Montgomery brothers had numerous opportunities to play with their more famous sibling under Wes' leadership throughout the 1960s. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide
