The Navarros were a quintet from Ashland, OR, near Medford, that evolved into Neighbr'hhood Childr'n, but not before leaving behind a pair of charming folk-rock demos. The group, led by rhythm guitarist/singer (and songwriter) Rick Bolz, featured Gary Campbell on lead guitar, Dianne Hoffman (sometimes spelled "Dyan") on the organ, George Olny on bass, and Tom Ryan on the drums. They started out doing surf music, but once folk-rock and psychedelia hit in the Bay Area in 1965-1966, the Navarros transformed themselves into a more ambitious and lyrical ensemble. Their music had a sweetly harmonized vocal sound and Bolz wrote highly melodic songs to which the group applied a solid beat. Overall, they sounded like a more animated version of the Beau Brummels with some extra harmonic wrinkles added, by virtue of Hoffman's backup singing, which vaguely recalled Signe Anderson's work with the early Jefferson Airplane. The Navarros evidently came close to making it, earning a spot on the Chad & Jeremy summer tour in 1965, but they had to wait until the name change to Neighbr'hhood Childr'n, and a couple of membership shifts, to make some headway outside of their hometown. ~ Bruce Eder, All Music Guide
