Your typical garden-variety {\rock} historian says that {$Big Star} never went over with American record buyers because the kids were more interested in {\hard rock} or {\prog} than smart {\power pop} at the time -- but that logic conveniently ignores the fact that {$the Raspberries} were scoring hits and selling tickets all across the nation at the same time {^Radio City} was dying on the vine. And while {$Eric Carmen} may have lacked {$Alex Chilton}'s snazz as a freak-genius guitarist or songwriter, at their best {$the Raspberries} were the band who succeeded where {$Big Star} failed, crafting gloriously hooky but potently rockin' three-minute tunes that moved the {\British Invasion} musical ethos ten years into the future. (And one could argue that {$Wally Bryson}, {$Jim Bonfanti}, and {$John Alleksic} were a more potent backing band than {$Chilton} had at the time, even if they lacked a visionary along the lines of {$Chris Bell}.) {^Greatest} covers most of the same territory that was charted out on previous {$Raspberries} compilations (most notably the {^Capitol Collectors Series} set from 1991), but the material has been remastered using 24-bit technology for greater punch and power, and the liner notes feature relevant commentary from {$Carmen}, {$Bryson}, and {$Bonfanti} on the songs. From the glorious teenage lust anthem {&"Go All the Way"} to {&"Overnight Sensation (Hit Record),"} still the best song about the rush of hearing yourself on the radio, {^Greatest} is an excellent one-stop shopping place for your {$Raspberries} needs. You may not need this to replace any of the previous greatest-hits sets, but anyone looking for a great introduction to this great band can buy this with confidence. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide

Although they were quite underrated during their tenures as functioning bands, the short-lived outfits {$the Raspberries} and {$the Babys} both became important influences on subsequent (and more commercially successful) bands, only after their respective breakups. The groups existed during two totally different time periods ({$Raspberries}, the early '70; {$Babys}, late '70s/early '80s), but both knew how to write memorable {\pop} hooks, and interestingly, both included singers that would go on to launch successful solo careers immediately following the breakup of their previous bands ({$Eric Carmen} and {$John Waite}). Hence, it makes sense for a pairing of the two groups for an edition of the budget-priced {^Back to Back Hits} series. {$The Raspberries}' sound was a hybrid of {$the Beatles}' melody and {$the Who}'s guitar riffs, as evidenced by such selections as the album-opening {&"Go All the Way"} (their biggest hit) and {&"I Wanna Be With You,"} but they also had a flair for penning orchestrated epics ({&"Overnight Sensation"}) and also syrupy {\ballads} ({&"Let's Pretend"}). Although {$the Babys} shared {$the Raspberries}' love for a good {\pop} melody (as evidenced by {&"If You've Got the Time"}), the group also resembled {$Foreigner} at times ({&"Isn't It Time"}) and an {\R&B} band ({&"Every Time I Think of You,"} which features {$Waite} dueting with a female singer). {$The Raspberries}/{$Babys} edition of {^Back to Back Hits} will serve as a fine (albeit very brief) introduction to both groups. ~ Greg Prato, All Music Guide

Intermixing singles with the band's best accompanying album tracks, this 20-song retrospective gives a good overall impression of {$the Raspberries}' strengths across their two years of recording, as well as hints of some weaknesses in the way they were represented on record. As expected, {$Eric Carmen} is the dominant songwriter, but {$Wally Bryson} and {$David Smalley} also show up with {&"Last Dance"} and {&"Hard to Get Over a Heartbreak,"} respectively, along with {$Scott McCarl} ({&"Rose Coloured Glasses"}), to give a hint of the range of composing talent in the band in its different phases. It's astonishing how many of their LP cuts would have made superb singles in their own right. It's clear listening to this collection that, between the record company's apparent inability to market their material to its fullest potential and the group's fear of sounding too English, that some killer tracks, like {&"Nobody Knows"} with appealing hooks, a great beat, and overflowing with melodic teen angst, and {&"Hard to Get Over a Heartbreak,"} were overlooked as potential singles. Of course, the disputes over songwriting and the matter of who was represented on their singles (and where, the A- or B-side) were among the factors that helped kill {$the Raspberries} after only a couple of years. This collection delineates a lot of the problems in the course of presenting the group's triumphs. An unusual amount of care has been taken in assembling the songs -- they all sound better than the original records, and the hotter single mix of {&"Overnight Sensation"} graces this disc. A serious fan may well want to own CDs of the group's complete albums (available on {@RPM Records} on two CDs), but this is one time that {@Capitol Records} did right by one of its own acts. ~ Bruce Eder , All Music Guide
