box_dog's Album Review for World Coming Down
""
Type O Negative have never really been considered a serious band, but World Coming Down changes that for the better and shows a true maturity to the songwriting and lyricism than ever before.
Now most people would scoff at the thought of taking Type O Negative into consideration as a serious band, but many people do! Long gone are the songs about the drinking of menstrual fluid and the dying of hair, it would seem that the new face of Type O is more "mature", although there is still the content based on the loss of life and that prolific gothic feel is still strongly embedded. However on World Coming Down they appear to have slowed down and at times have the appearance of an almost pop metal band.
World coming down is another journey into the psyche of vocalist Peter Steele with his odd lyrical genius. Tracks like Everyone I love is dead, Creepy Green Light and Everything Dies count for the sing alongs that have made previous albums well known and the best way to spend a drunken Saturday afternoon. But it’s the newer sounds of tracks like White Slavery and the title track World Coming Down that are the showing of age and maturity.
Musically there’s been even more emphasis put into the recording and studio influence. But more comically noted is the fact that drummer Johnny Kelly has made better use of his Chyna cymbal, which at times he tends to over use, but still rather refreshing and shows further progression. More programming, more advanced and better conceived bass & guitar riffs all go to show that Type O Negative may have actually come into their own and are more than due their time in the sun.
For fans there is still a lot of the old present, but I think that for those people expecting another Bloody Kisses or October Rust they’ll still be pleasantly surprised, although a bit miffed by the obvious differences in comparison. Still this is definitely a well-conceived album, which I must admit did take me a while to come to grips with, but will sit handsomely in anyone’s accrued CD collection!
