Voyage

Not to be confused with a late-'70s disco act called Voyage -- which was best-known for its hit "Souvenirs" -- the subject of this bio is an adventurous world music outfit that was formed in Germany in the early '90s. This multicultural approach is built around three percussionists: Sascha Gotowtschikow, Charly Böck, and founder Roman Seehon, who decided to form Voyage after a musical encounter with Jordanian drummer Ibrahim Abu Hassan. While Hassan's speciality is Middle Eastern music, Voyage looks to different parts of the world for inspiration , not only the Middle East, but also Africa, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Voyage has a wide variety of influences, and the highly unpredictable group doesn't hesitate to fuse different types of world music. Nor are they shy about employing a variety of traditional acoustic instruments -- during the course of a Voyage album, one might hear anything from the ney (an Arabic flute) and Indian tabla drums to the Peruvian cajon, Spanish flamenco guitar, and African dundun drums. One never knows from one tune to the next whether Voyage will be turning to Japan, Morocco, Peru, or Spain -- or perhaps several other countries -- for inspiration. The group recorded their first album in late 1993 and early 1994, providing the eclectic Kelimdance for Miramar. Voyage's second album, Selam, came out on Blue Sun in 1998. ~ Alex Henderson, All Music Guide
