Were it not for the Vancouver BC Record Collector's Association, this local quintet would have remained forever unheard by the world at large. Fortunately, the VRCA's History of Vancouver Rock and Roll, Vol. 4 (VRCA 004; 1991) rectifies that enormous injustice. The band included Jeff Edington (lead vocals), Lindsay Mitchell (lead guitar), Bill Dunlaw (keyboards), Morris Hillan (bass) and Dave Wilson (drums). Their reputation rests upon a single track, previously unreleased -- a 1966 version of the Tom Northcott tune, "Mary Jane." The Marksmens' effort is, in a word, superb. It's hard to imagine this track mouldering in some dusty tape box when clearly it screams for attention. With a bass line suggestive of "96 Tears" by ? Mark & the Mysterians, "Mary Jane" is smouldering folk-rock riddled with psychedelia -- a true gem. Though the Marksmen soon went their separate ways, Edington and Mitchell found new life with another Vancouver group -- the self-proclaimed "legendary" Seeds of Time. ~ Stansted Montfichet, All Music Guide
