I just finished reading "Promote Your Music (Board Rules)" and the site's TOS. While I didn't see any specific prohibition of a couple things I thought I might try, I figured I'd check just to make certain.
Are RIYL (recommended if you like) style promos allowed? What I was thinking of doing was listing the three acts I've been compared to most often in the thread's subject line, then more in the message body (the idea being that folks could be interested in hearing what someone compared to a diverse group of acts might sound like). But if that's not allowed...or even "iffy", for that matter, I won't, of course.
And am right in thinking that it's alright to mention another site or sites one has music on, provided he/she doesn't make a habit of it? I never post the same song on multiple sites, with the exception of my archive.org page, where I've posted songfiles that I've deleted from my other pages.
Thank you very much for your time and assistance.

That's a pretty nifty feature; thank you for cluing me in! In all honesty, though, I probably won't end up taking advantage of it for much the same reason that I don't have any tattoos- indecision.

If the main purpose of posting is to promote yourself, then no, it's not allowed. We'd prefer the boards to stay spamfree, and users are pretty savvy about musicians who are just there to self-promote. You'll probably get a better response just by legitimately participating in discussions, leaving feedback for other musicians, etc.

So, any use of the "the Promote Your Music board, MP3.com's home for promoting your music" is frowned upon and actively discouraged?

I am very active on another site, doing all of the things you listed as means of increasing traffic on my page, but encouraging listens is never really what I have in mind. I do those things because I'm a voracious consumer of all things musical. I rely on self-promotional forum threads...and more specifically, well-worded thread titles...to find the music I like. That's why I posed the question- RIYL style promos help me find the odd little sorts of music I enjoy, and I've found them effective in reaching that odd little portion of the listening community who might really enjoy the odd little sort of music I make. That, and...

"I'm most often compared to that Progressive/Psychedelic band who had one of the best-selling albums of all time which can be synced up to a certain movie about a girl from Kansas who travels to a magical place via tornado, and that gravelly-voiced singer/songwriter/actor who writes music in an indescribably twisted caberet style, and a seminal Funk band that used to dress in wild outfits and feature a spaceship in their live concerts"

...is an awfully long thread title.

And I gather that it's not so much that we're allowed one mention of another site where we post music; it's that any number of mentions are alright, so long as those mentions involve no other site than MySpace?

No, no, of course we encourage you to use the Promote Your Music board -- just not to spam or flood the board. You can post ONE self-promoting message on the Promote Your Music board, as well as the board for your music's genre. You're free to use the RIYL style titles in that ONE message, if you feel like that will entice other users -- you just can't post more messages, under the guise of "recommending music" to other users, when your real intention is to promote your own music.

In general, we'd prefer that self-promotion involved your own artist profile on MP3.com -- that's why we offer the profiles! -- but unless we get lots of spam promoting other sites, we won't moderate the message just for pointing to another site. We recognize that other sites offer certain features that we don't offer yet, although it does feel a little trashy to have someone come on to MP3.com just to promote their myspace site without setting up an MP3.com artist profile (or, worse, having an mp3.com artist profile, but still pointing to their myspace site in the MP3.com threads).

Thank you kindly, Jax'. Those policies make a great deal of sense and are, IMHO, pretty much ideal. I've been told that I tend to be a little overly idealistic on occasion, though, so, y'know, better safe than sorry.

Now, if I can just find that list of acts I've been compared to...
