    MP3.com Forum Terms
    Acceptance of Terms
MP3.com provides message board services to you, the visitor, based on its Terms of Service outlined here. When using the forums provided by MP3.com, you are subject to these posted terms. Usage of the services on this site means acceptance of these terms. The TOS may be changed and without direct notice to individual visitors, so it is recommended that you check back with this page if you have questions or concerns.(Back)

    Account Responsibility
Users are solely responsible for protecting their accounts from access by others. "Group" and/or shared accounts are not allowed. You are strongly encouraged to select a hard-to-guess password and not reuse that password on any other sites where it may be read by the owners or administrators of that site.

While it is acceptable for users to maintain multiple accounts on MP3.com, MP3.com can and does track multiple shared accounts from a single or multiple computers as one account in terms of TOS violations. If the TOS is violated severely enough to warrant banning one account, all known accounts shared between a single or multiple users who use the same computer may also be banned for the actions of the violating account at the administrators' discretion Because of this rule, it is recommended that board users do not share their accounts with others, nor share their computers used to access the site with others, as the actions of some other person could easily directly impact all known shared message board accounts.(Back)

    Content Notice
By viewing the site content, you agree that all content on the MP3.com message boards is the responsibility of the person from which the content originated. You agree that neither MP3.com nor its sponsors or affiliates are responsible for all content that you personally post or upload. MP3.com does not directly control any content posted on the boards, and does not guarantee the truthfulness or quality of any content. You agree that while using the MP3.com message boards, you may be exposed to content that is offensive or objectionable, and that you will in no way hold MP3.com nor its sponsors or affiliates liable in any way, shape, or form for any harm or loss that may come to you or others because of viewing this content. MP3.com is not responsible for screening content before it is posted, although an offensive language filter is installed on the system that will reject certain posts that may contain certain words considered offensive or used most often in an offensive way.(Back)

    Privacy and Release of Information
Under normal circumstances, MP3.com will never release your provided information to any third-party without a court order requiring us to do so. However, in cases of certain severe or repeated TOS violations or illegal activities, we reserve the right to send any known information about you and your accounts to your ISP (including libraries, schools, and places of employment), e-mail service provider, your ISP account owner (if someone else is paying for it), and any parties whose copyright has clearly been infringed by your actions on the boards.(Back)

    Registration Requirements
To view messages on the MP3.com message boards without user restrictions, no registration is required or necessary. To post messages on the boards, view boards with level restrictions, and use other advanced services, you must register with MP3.com using a valid e-mail address. On registration, an activation key in the form of a URL will be mailed to the address you provided. You must visit this URL using the web browser of your choice to activate the account. No posting privileges are granted until the account is activated. MP3.com does not require you to use your real name or other identification that can be easily traced to you, and the e-mail address you provide will be kept private. To register on MP3.com, registrants must be 13 years or older. MP3.com does not knowingly collect any information from any users under 13 years, and if it is found that an underage user has fraudulently registered, their account will immediately be terminated.(Back)

    Terms Violations
Topics and message posts that violate the TOS will be deleted from the boards, and additional penalties may be applied at the moderator's discretion. Reposting deleted violations (yours or those of others) is also considered a violation. Messages and topics may be removed for any reason at the sole discretion of MP3.com and its appointed moderators. User accounts may be warned, suspended, or revoked for any reason at the sole discretion of MP3.com and its appointed moderators. All determinations of what is "acceptable" and "unacceptable" content will be determined solely by MP3.com and whoever it appoints as moderators. You agree the decision of the moderators and administrators is final, and you may not legally contest their rulings. Intentional, repeated, or severe violations are cause for the banning of your account, all use of the boards from your IP address or your entire ISP, and MP3.com contacting your ISP or other relevant parties about your activities.(Back)

    Member Conduct
    Advertising
Posts that clearly advertise or promote a service, product, site, or personal blog (here or otherwise) are not allowed. This includes, but is not limited to:
Unsolicited commercial or personal web site advertisements
For-Sale/For-Trade/For-Auction/Wanted notices CDs, LPs, DVDs, VHS tapes, downloads, screen captures, and any other copyrighted material, in part or in whole, owned by someone else
"Make Money Fast" scams, chain letters, and pyramid schemes
Advertising for another message board Solicitations and drawings for charity or profit events
Users are allowed to include a web site address in a signature (text only), request comments on their personal site in a social setting, or provide only once an interesting or relevant link to another site. (Back)

    Bugs and Exploits
Using exploits or tricks in the MP3.com code to gain privileges, access, or abilities not clearly intended by the board design are prohibited. Making exploits public or using them for personal benefit is grounds for immediate loss of all known accounts.(Back)

    Censor Bypassing
The MP3.com message boards are programmed with a list of words that are considered vulgar under any context, and these words are not allowed to be posted. Trying to bypass the censor by misspelling, inserting spaces or symbols, switching letters, using look-alike symbols, or any other method is not allowed. The only acceptable method of posting one of these vulgar words is to obscure it, making it impossible to determine what the word is without context. Also, certain words are restricted from being used in topic titles and user information pages; bypassing the censor to post those words where they are restricted is also disallowed. For example, if "gris" is a banned word:
Not allowed: g-r-i-s, gr*s, g***, 9|-1$, girs, gryeeeas, grizznizz, **** (rhymes with "bris")
    Allowed: ****, ****ed, ****ing, g'ed, g-word (Back)

    Disruptive Posting
Posts that disrupt the message boards for other users, intentional or not, are prohibited. This includes, but is not limited, to:
Message posts or topic titles that force browsers to scroll horizontally
Large blank or content-free posts Posts that consist only of quotes, or quotes plus an unsubstantial reply ("Okay" - "Yeah!" - "LOL" - smile), or just an unsubstantial reply.
Excessive quoting (i.e., quoting a ten-paragraph post to respond to one sentence)
"Bumping" your older topics (posting in them well after the last post and/or primarily to keep them near the top of a forum)
Posting multiple identical or near-identical messages or topics, including "fad" topics
Intentionally hard-to-read topic titles and thread content (i.e. ALL CAPS, AlTeRnAtE cApS, no spaces, no or excessive punctuation, 1337 speak, et cetera)
Posting multiple hard-to-read or absurd messages in a single or multiple topics
Posting large ASCII art (except in social topics specifically calling for it)
Post counting (i.e. "First", "100th Post") (Back)

    False Moderation Reports
Please note that Report Abuse is only to be used for genuine breaches of these Terms of Service and is not to be used as a means of settling petty disputes and squabbles between board users. Repeated reporting of posts which do not violate the terms may result in your account being suspended.(Back)

    Flaming (Insulting Other Users)
Posts of a hostile or insulting nature, toward other board members and an artist or band, individually or as a group, directly or indirectly, beyond the bounds of reasonable and informed criticism and debate, are not allowed. This includes, but is not limited to:
Name-calling ("You're an idiot", "You moron") Direct insults ("Screw you")
    Offensive orders ("Go kill yourself")
Suggestions ("Are you stupid or something?") or insults towards family ("Your mom...")
Physical threats, even as jokes ("I'm going to hunt you down and set you on fire!")
Derogatory references to another poster's experience or lack thereof.
Excessive upper-cap posting, which is the Internet equivalent of hostile screaming. (Back)

    Flooding, Invading, and Board Wars
Users will be immediately banned (with any associated accounts) for:
Flooding a board with multiple disruptive topics or posts
Posting a single identical post on multiple forums, including but not limited to petitions
Invading another board (flooding a board as a group with multiple topics or posts)
Announcing or inciting a "war" or any conflict with the regular members of another board. (Back)

    Harassment/Stalking/Privacy
Continual harassing behavior directed towards a certain individual or group with the intent of creating an intimidating, offensive, or hostile environment on the boards with the Personal Messaging (PM) system, with or without use of explicit or implicit threats is strictly prohibited. Posting private information without permission is also prohibited. (Back)

    Illegal Activities
Posts that violate or incite others to violate the law are not allowed. This includes (but is not limited to) discussing, asking for or providing, in any way, shape, or form:
Illegal copies of copyrighted software and related applications (ROMs, Warez)
Methods of avoiding copyright protection (Cracks, No-CD Patches, CD Keys)
Illegal copies in part or in whole of copyrighted music (MP3s), movies, videos, TV shows, images, or any other media
Reprints of material from other web sites (pay or free)
(Note: simply mentioning the word "download" is not a violation of TOS policy, given the number of legal download sites. Specific illegal download sites or methods must be mentioned for a violation to occur.) (Back)

    Impersonation
Users will be immediately banned (with any associated accounts) for impersonating other boards users by creating or using a message board account with a name clearly intended to impersonate, mock, or antagonize another user, falsely claiming to be another message board member.(Back)

    Offensive Posting
Posts of a patently offensive nature are not allowed. This includes, but is not limited to:
Using vulgar, profane, or sexually explicit language Using race, religion, sexual orientation, culture, ethnicity, handicap, nationality, or gender as a means of insult
Using sexual preference terms as insult in any way, shape, or form Using threatening, harassing, defamatory, hate-speech, or libellous language
Posting or requesting links to or material from pornographic, obscene, or hate-speech web sites
Posting links to web sites with potentially offensive content without a clear warning
Descriptions or details about any sexual act or sexual organs
Sexually suggestive or nearly nude images that are judged inappropriate by Moderators or Administrators. As a general guideline, this refers to images that would be censored on network television or in a daily newspaper. (Back)

    Off-Topic Posting
The main purpose of the MP3.com message boards is to provide discussion forums for musical artists and albums. Topicality is expected and will be enforced on all boards for current and disbanded artists or artist groups, as well as all general and special interest boards. On these boards, topics designed to get hundreds of posts with little or no content, topics that have nothing to do with the board's category, "secret base" type threads, and other "social" topics are not allowed. Other users are not on-topic in genre and artist forums. The manner in which a user chooses to post, any spelling or grammatical mistakes they make, their lack of experience, etc., is not on-topic.(Back)

    Other
Since we can't have a rule to cover everything, this is the rule to cover everything. These are public boards, so act like you would if you were in a public place. MP3.com reserves the right to choose the guidelines of objectionable content based on its knowledge of users and company policy. These issues are left to the individual moderators, but may include any material that is knowingly false or defamatory, misleading, inaccurate, abusive, vulgar, hateful, harassing, obscene, racist, sexist, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, invasive of a person's privacy or that otherwise violates any law or encourages conduct constituting a criminal offense.(Back)

    Reviews
We've noticed a flood of reviews coming in lately for songs or albums that have not yet been released. Either we have a growing number of users with psychic abilities or some folks out there are using the review form to speculate on what "might" be on the album in order to gain points. Please be advised: Reviews of songs or albums that have not yet been released WILL BE DELETED. Posting these "speculation" reviews, and for that matter any other TOS violations associated with the reviews section, could wind up costing you points. So, please, if you want to write a review, listen to the song or album first.(Back)

    Signatures
Signatures may not exceed 550 pixels wide and 200 pixels tall Text based signatures may not exceed 14 lines Signatures of an offensive nature are not allowed Users are allowed to include one web site address in a signature (Back)

    Trolling (Inciting Flames)
Posts intended mainly to annoy or offend other posters by going against the clear nature of a board or topic is not allowed. This includes, but is not limited to: Provoking other users to respond with flames Provoking fans of a particular artist or genre, especially on boards dedicated to that artist or genre (i.e., "This band suxx!!!") Making misleading topic titles Asking useless questions Posting false information as fact Threatening to report other users Posting hostile and insulting comments about other users in blogs and non-mp3-related forums (Back)

    Unauthorized Access
Accessing or attempting any MP3.com user account not belonging to the user in question without permission is prohibited. Accessing another user's account in this manner is grounds for immediate loss of all known accounts.(Back)

    Usernames, Profiles, and Forms
Violating any of rules with a username, any part of the user profile (signature, quote, e-mail, IM), or by feedback forms (such as the Mark for Moderation function) is considered a severe violation. If a Moderator or Administrator finds your Signature inappropriate and asks you to remove it, it must be removed.(Back)

    General Information About MP3.com

    What is MP3.com?
MP3.com is a free Web site dedicated to all things MP3 and music related, catering to both artists looking to promote their material and connect with listeners, and to fans that thrive on discovering new music and expressing their opinions. The site also offers robust artist information like discographies, bios, and song clips, plus thousands of free music tracks, daily news, live sessions, exclusive interviews, weekly podcasts, charts, a tech guide, and more.(Back)

    Who is CNET Networks?
You can find more information about CNET Networks here. MP3.com is specifically part of the Games & Entertainment division of CNET, which includes GameSpot, GameFAQs, TV.com, and FilmSpot, among other properties.(Back)

How/Where do you get your information? How reliable is it?
Information posted on MP3.com comes from a wide variety of sources, including the All Music Guide, industry sources, and the artists themselves. Users who register artist accounts can upload their own identifying information, photos, videos, and clips, and have total editing control over their page.(Back)

    How does MP3.com support itself?
MP3.com is supported almost entirely through paid advertising on the site. Without these ads, MP3.com would not be able to hire a staff and provide the user base with the attention, new features, editorial, and quality control that we currently provide. Note that CNET Networks takes a firm stance against ad obtrusiveness, and we try to make sure that we don't alienate our users with their incorporation into the site.(Back)

    Contributing to MP3.com

What is MP3.com's general submission/community philosophy?
MP3.com aims to be the largest source of independent MP3 information on the Internet. Drawing upon the collective knowledge and resources of the music artist and fan community, MP3.com sports an easy-to-use user-submission system that lets registered user artists create and manage their own artist pages. User fans can check out artists and express their opinions by writing reviews, tracking artists, and discussions in the forums.(Back)

How do I add my music to MP3.com?
To upload your band's original music onto MP3.com, you must be registered for an ARTIST account, not a FAN account. To complete registration, you will need to upload at least one track. Please ensure that your tracks are encoded at 128 kbps MP3. Then,
    1. Click on "my profile" in the upper right corner of the screen.
    2. Click on your ARTIST profile under "BANDS," halfway down the right side of the page.
    3. Click on the "Songs" tab of your ARTIST profile.
    4. Use the orange buttons to upload and organize your tracks. (Back)

How do I change the order of the songs on my artist profile?
Only songs that have been organized into albums can be re-ordered. Click on the album to expand the tracks list, then use the "Order" boxes next to each track to organize the songs as you like.(Back)

The song I uploaded is playing more slowly than normal. How do I correct this?
MP3.com uses Flash MX to re-sample all audio down to bit rates in increments of 11 (11, 22, 44, etc.). That re-sampling will cause the perceived slow-down in pitch if the file is not encoded at one of these bit rates (i.e., if you encoded it at 48 khz, a common setting in iTunes). Unfortunately, we cannot recode the track on the Flash end, so please ensure that your tracks adhere to these guidelines and re-upload any tracks that were previously affected. You can do this by clicking the "Songs" tab of your ARTIST profile and clicking on the song title [edit] link. We're considering resampling mp3's on our end for the flash player, but in the meantime, encoding using the above settings is the way to go. Also note that if you download the mp3, it will play normally.(Back)

How long does it take to get my songs approved?
After you have uploaded music to your ARTIST profile, please be patient as the song needs to go through a moderation process to ensure it adheres to MP3.com guidelines. Songs will show up on the site approximately 24-72 hours after your submission.(Back)

How do I add my video to MP3.com?
To upload original video content onto MP3.com, you must be registered for an ARTIST account, not a FAN account: 1. Log in to MP3.com with your ARTIST account.
    2. Click on "my profile" in the upper right corner of the screen.
    3. Click on your ARTIST profile under "BANDS," halfway down the right side of the page.
    4. Click on the "Videos" tab of your ARTIST profile.
    5. Use the orange buttons to upload and organize your video(s).(Back)

What are the proper encoding resolutions I should use when uploading videos?
Generally you should consider these primary bullet points when uploading videos:
ACCEPTABLE FORMATS: .MOV, .AVI. .WMV (there are a few others but these 3 are preferred)
    BITRATE: 700-1500kbps
    FILESIZE: < 100mb
    ASPECT RATIO: 4X3 (NTSC)
    FRAME SIZE: 720x480 or 320 x 240 (Back)

My band is already listed on MP3.com, but it looks like it is managed by All Music Guide (AMG). How can I take over the artist profile and add new information and/or songs?
To gain access to your profile, you'll first need to register a FAN account by going here: www.mp3.com/signup. Then, send an e-mail to uploads@mp3.com with the following information:

Subject: AMG Artist Conversion Request Body: Include the following: - USERNAME - E-MAIL registered - URL of ARTIST profile you are requesting to take over - ARTIST name you are requesting to take over - Additional information and supporting evidence that you are an official member of the band, or person in charge of managing content on the band's page (i.e., URLs, websites, artist press kits, etc). Please note that it will take approximately 24 hours for the conversion to be processed.(Back)<

My artist guide is listed as Rock + Pop, but I'm really Alt + Indie. How do I change genres?
Log in as your ARTIST profile, got to your Band page, click on the Admin tab, then Artist info, and select the appropriate genre from the dropdown menu. Click submit.(Back)

How do I edit information for an Artist on MP3.com?
As of now, All Music Guide (AMG) manages the data of many artist profiles on MP3.com. We are in the process of migrating away from AMG into a User Contribution model such like TV.com. Until then, to be able to edit information for artists on MP3.com, you, the artist (or administrator), must exclusively own all artist names or represent the individual or entity that does (as in the case of a record label).(Back)

How do I write a user review? How long does it take for them to show up?
Any registered user can write a an artist or album review on MP3.com. Simply click the "write review" button on the right side of any page. Reviews show up immediately on the site after you hit the submit button. All reviews need an associated rating and must meet the minimum word count. Instructions can be found on the review form.(Back)

    How are reviews sorted?
Reviews get floated by their approval within the community. On any given review you'll see an "agree" link and a "disagree" link at the bottom of the review. For shows with more than five reviews, we sort the best reviews--those that the community agrees with the most--and float them to the top. Our staff may float a particularly well-written review to the top of the reviews list.(Back)

    MP3.com Accounts

I signed up for a FAN account, but now I'm in a band and would like to create an ARTIST profile.
Sign up for an ARTIST account here, then follow instructions to upload music. To complete registration for an artist account, you will need to upload at least one track, encoded at 128 kbps MP3. Your new ARTIST profile will be approved in 24-72 hours.(Back)

How long does it take to get my Artist profile approved?
To complete registration for an ARTIST profile, you will need to upload at least one track. After you upload, please be patient as it will take 24-72 hours for your ARTIST profile to be approved. If your ARTIST profile is still pending after 48 hours, please e-mail uploads@mp3.com with the following information: Subject: Artist profile still pending after 48 hours Body: Provide us with your USERNAME, URL of ARTIST profile, E-MAIL registered, and any other information that might help us investigate the problem.(Back)

How do I cancel my membership?
Your account is active on all CNET Networks Entertainment properties --TV.com, FilmSpot, GameSpot and MP3.com.
Due to the cross-site nature of user accounts, we cannot delete a user's profile. However, you can set your profile to private. Here's how to do it: From the Edit My Profile link on the profile page >>Profile >> Communications >> Who can view profile>> Just Me>> Save Changes That makes it so only you can see your own profile page, nobody else. You can test it out by changing the settings and then logging out of your account and reloading the profile page again.

Additionally, if there's anything about the site that is causing confusion or that you have questions about, please let us know. Sometimes users don't quite understand the features of MP3.com, and want to cancel their registration as a result. If there's anything about the site we can clarify to enhance your user experience, please feel free to ask!(Back)

How do I delete my artist profile?

    User Profiles

    What is a user profile?
A user profile is "home base" for any registered user. On your profile page you can access your ARTIST profile (if you have one), add to your blog, find your previously written reviews, check your contribution history, find updates about your favorite bands, and manage your friends list.(Back)

    What are "my favorites"?
MP3.com lets you create a list of your favorite bands and musicians, which you can easily present to other users of the site, including your friends. On every Artist page you'll find an "Add to Favorites" button that will add the respective Artist to your favorites list. Doing so will also kick-start the following features: • You'll immediately begin to receive updates from around the Web in your "updates" tab and on the home page about those bands or artists. • Your favorite artists will now appear in the quick-jump "My Artists" dropdown in the top right portion of any page you visit on MP3.com.(Back)

Can I use a different email address but still keep the same profile name?
Yes, to change the email address associated with your user account click the "Account" tab on your profile preferences (located under both "Edit My Profile" and "Preferences" when you are on your profile page). Simply type in the updated email address and hit "Save Changes". You will then receive a confirmation email with a link to authorize this change. Once you click on the link and confirm that the new address listed is correct you are all set!(Back)

Can I make my profile private? Why does the site show my birth date and location? I don't want people knowing that!
First off, your birthday and location show up only when you're viewing your own profile. No other user can see that information, and you cannot view that information about other users. CNET never shares your personal data with third parties. Check our privacy policy for more information. If you still wish to keep your profile private from all others, simply open your preferences panel (top right) and set "keep my profile private" on the options menu. This will block users from seeing anything in your profile.(Back)

How do I add/change the ICON on my profile?
When logged into your profile, click on the button "my preferences". Click on the "Profile" tab above, then scroll down to "Select an Icon Set". There you have a list of the current icons available to choose from. You can also upload your own icon just as long as it's not offensive and it's 80x80, 19K maximum in size.(Back)

How do I add/change the banner on my profile?
When logged into your profile, click on the button "my preferences". Click on the "Profile" tab above, then scroll down to the field marked "URL for Profile Banner Image." Insert the URL link to an image measuring 760 pixels by 40 pixels.(Back)

How do I add/change my signature in the forums?
When logged into your profile, click on the button "my preferences". In the new window, click on the "Boards" tab above, then scroll down to "Signature". Some things to remember about signatures:

What are friends? How does the friends system work?
MP3.com lets you add other users from the site to your "friends" list. Adding a friend is as simple as clicking the "track this person" button on any user's profile. Doing so lets you receive updates when that user updates his or her blog, posts a new review, or makes a post on the forums. Simply go to the "updates" tab in your profile page to see what your friends have been up to lately on the site. If for any reason you need to remove friends from your friends list, simply go to your "friends" tab, within your profile, and use the checkboxes to remove them.(Back)

How do I send a PM (Private Message)?
Our Private Message (PM) system is basically like email, but can only be sent between registered users on MP3.com, FilmSpot, TV.com, and Gamespot.com websites. When logged into your profile, click on the button "Send Message" (located underneath your user Level on the right-hand side of the page). A message box will appear. Simply fill in the profile name of the user you wish to contact, write a subject and your message in the marked fields and hit the "Send Message" button. You can also click on the little mail icon in the top right of any page.(Back)

    User Leveling and Emblems

What are user levels? How do I gain levels?
Levels are a fun and fair way to reward and identify prominent community members. Put simply, leveling is a scorecard that marks the loyalty of a user to MP3.com and the value of that user's activity. Note that each level is harder to attain than the last one. Users can gain points toward a new level by taking a variety of actions on the site. These include but are not limited to:
    • Simply visiting the site each day.
    • Posting on the message boards or sending PMs to other users.
    • Writing reviews. • Updating your profile by posting on your blog, adding a banner, making comments, or adding artists to your "my artists" list.
    • Commenting on news stories and other users' blogs.(Back)

Can you lose levels? Is there a level cap?
The only time users can lose a level is if they are specifically singled out for abuse of the system as a disciplinary measure. This happens so rarely that these users are personally notified. If you do notice your level going down, please jump on the support forum and let one of the staff members know immediately. There is a cap on total points you can earn in any given day. This exists as a precautionary measure to limit abusive users who may attempt to game the points system. (Back)

What does the colored bar in my profile represent? Why does it say I'm a One-Armed Drummer?
The colored bar is simply a visual representation of your progress toward the next level. When the bar is nearly filled, you'll most likely gain a level within a couple of days. Along with this display, individual levels are associated with a "rank." The level 1 rank is a "One-Armed Drummer," while level 2 is a "Sucka MC." Each level has a unique identifier that is an allusion to some part of music history. We'll let you figure them out!(Back)
