With her planned comeback at the VMAs 10 days away, Spears' new single hits the radio and "Mindfreak" magician preps show.
For more than two years, Britney Spears has somehow captivated the masses with everything but music.
After marrying Kevin Federline, having two children with him, divorcing him, shaving her head, entering rehab, and sustaining a seemingly endless array of embarrassments, the one-time teen queen of pop is apparently ready for her close-up.
Spears will reportedly mark her comeback with a performance during MTV's Video Music Awards on Sunday, September 9. During the show, bad boy illusionist Criss "Mindfreak" Angel will guide Spears in and out of a series of mirrors, making it seem as though she vanishes and then reappears several times, according to the New York Daily News.
But in an effort to generate buzz for the performance and a subsequent album, Spears has sent her first new single to radio, with NYC radio station Z100 streaming the song "Gimme More" on its Web site starting last night.
The song, which begins with Britney defiantly declaring, "It's Britney, b****," features Spears singing in breathy vocals over a Timbaland-esque beat producer by his protege Nate "Danja" Hills. Another song, "Cold As Fire," has also leaked online.
Spears' label, Jive Records, told People magazine that it has set a November 13 release date for a new Britney album. A video for "Gimme More" is expected to debut next week.
