For their seventh studio album, In Rainbows, available for download on the band's site Oct. 10, rockers ask fans to name their price.

The mysterious messages, cryptic teases, and vague hints can cease.

Radiohead has finally announced a release date for the band's long-awaited seventh studio album, and has done so with typical bravado.

In a message posted to their Web site, the UK rockers said they will make the new album, In Rainbows (their first since 2003's Hail to the Thief), available as a digital download on Oct. 10.

"Hello everyone. Well, the new album is finished, and it's coming out in 10 days," guitarist Jonny Greenwood said in a post on the site.

Given the band's 2005 exit from longtime label home EMI, its decision to go it alone is no major surprise--but it comes with a twist. Radiohead said that fans can name their own price for the album. In other words, as little as the 90-cent credit card processing fee.

"It's up to you," reads a disclaimer on the checkout screen.

But in a play for diehard fans and perhaps as a counterweight to fans who pay nothing but the processing fee, the band is also offering In Rainbows as a "discbox," which will feature the new album on CD and double vinyl, as well as a second disc with seven additional songs, photos, artwork, and lyrics. The materials will be encased in a hardback book and slipcase.

The discbox will sell for £40 ($82) and will ship "on or before" Dec. 3, according to the site.

As for the new material, much of it was road tested on tour last year, including "15 Step," "Bodysnatchers," and "House of Cards." Others, including "Weird Fishes," "Last Flowers," and "Faust Arp," appear to be songs written more recently.

Radiohead has yet announce a traditional distribution deal for In Rainbows, but the band's publicist told Billboard that a physical version of the album will be released in 2008.

Wow, very odd. I'd love to have the discbox but $80 is a bit nuts for that. It shouldn't be any more than $40-$50, but then again it isn't being mass produced by a record label so it's bound to be more costly to make. I hate digital downloads though so I'd probably just give them the requisite 90 cents and then buy the album as a regular CD when it hits next year. That discbox is tempting though...

If you decide it's worth more, then buy another copy of the album for more money. Since it's just an mp3, you can delete the files, or maybe even give them to a friend.

A very interesting pricing model. It shows a lot of bravado on Radiohead's behalf ... I hope fans will part with at least some cash.

This is one way to kill off piracy!

This is awesome. Can you pay them retroactively? What if I give them ten bucks but then decide it's worth more?

Radiohead was one of the few alternative bands of the early '90s to draw heavily from the grandiose arena rock that characterized U2's early albums. But the band internalized that epic sweep, turning it inside out to tell tortured, twisted tales of angst and alienation. Vocalist Thom Yorke's pained lyrics were brought to life by the group's...
