J-Lo pregnancy rumors abound
Imagine doing a press tour for your new album when all anyone wants to talk about is the one thing you want to avoid. That's the conundrum Jennifer Lopez found herself in this week, as she did a tour of TV shows in New York City in the hopes of promoting her new album, Brave. But instead of questions about the music, Lopez was mostly met with inquiries into her much-rumored pregnancy, both subtle and not so much.
There's been no official announcement from Lopez or husband Marc Anthony, but Us Weekly went ahead and announced the news on its cover this week regardless. The mag quoted Damien Fahey, cohost of MTV's Total Request Live, as saying that Lopez walks, sits, and stands like a pregnant woman. Lopez, 38, is four months pregnant, the mag reported, and it cites her mother Guadalupe as the source for its report that J-Lo will be having twins.
Lopez also appeared on Late Night with David Letterman and ABC's Good Morning America but was largely spared direct questioning on the matter. Letterman did ask the singer her thoughts on parenthood in general, and Lopez sidestepped the question.
Lil Wayne in legal predicament
In one of the more strange twists to Lil Wayne's already odd career, the New Orleans rapper was jailed over the weekend after a show in Boise, Idaho, on a felony warrant stemming from Fulton County, Georgia. Turns out the rapper--real name Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.--was wanted after failing to show up for two court hearings over a 2006 charge on possession of marijuana and more than 100 Xanax and hydrocodone pills. Wayne was booked into the Ada County Jail on the charge of "being a fugitive to Idaho." After spending the night, he was released on $10,000 bond.
Wayne's attorney Stacey Richman told MTV News that it was simply a paperwork mistake and that the case had been taken care of by his previous lawyer, who told him it had been dismissed. "He never heard a thing about it again," Richman said. "A year later, the Fulton County [Georgia] DA made a proceeding on it and we didn't know, and whoever represented [Wayne] in the past didn't notify him either."
Wayne will remain free on bond until the district attorney decides how to proceed. The Ada County Jail was reportedly inundated by calls from angry fans about the arrest.
Diddy sued over B.I.G. tracks
Diddy is being sued by a onetime consultant who is now in prison and was once named as a "person of interest" in the 1997 murder of Notorious B.I.G. James Sabatino, who is serving a jail sentence on charges unrelated to the killing of B.I.G., filed a lawsuit from prison against the hip-hop mogul, claiming Diddy--real name Sean Combs--owes him more than $19 million for music by B.I.G.
According to the lawsuit, Sabatino flew B.I.G. to Miami in 1994 to perform a show and record some music. The rapper recorded about 17 minutes of vocals, and the session was also captured on about 90 minutes of video footage. Sabatino claims that although there was no contract between the parties, he owns the rights to the recorded content because he paid for the rapper's travel expenses and studio time.
After B.I.G. was killed in 1997, Combs agreed to buy the music and video footage from Sabatino for $200,000, according to the complaint, but gave him only $25,000 and promised the rest of the money in 60 days, saying that he didn't want to be seen giving a large sum of money to someone named as a "person of interest in the murder case.
Sabatino and Notorious B.I.G. were scheduled to meet the night of the killing, but Sabatino never showed up. Sabatino says in the lawsuit that he felt pressured not to talk about the dispute because Combs had been questioned by police about the rapper's death. Combs apparently told police he did not feel Sabatino was involved in the slaying, but Sabatino says he feared Combs would change his story and implicate him even if it was not true.
Yoko Ono erects peace tower
Continuing her ongoing quest to give peace a chance, Yoko Ono unveiled the Imagine Peace Tower on Videy island in Iceland's capital of Reykjavik on what would have been husband John Lennon's 67th birthday. Ono and Beatles drummer Ringo Starr lit up the chill night with the tower of blue light as about 200 people sang along with Lennon's song "Imagine," playing in the background.
Lennon was shot dead outside his New York apartment building December 8, 1980, by deranged fan Mark David Chapman. The tower is a stories-tall beam of light that will radiate from a wishing well bearing the words "imagine peace" in 24 languages. The plan is for the tower to be lit each year between October 9 and December 8.
Ono, 74, has said that she came up with the concept for the light tower in 1965 and that Lennon was interested. "This is the biggest birthday present I gave to John," she told the Associated Press last month.
Peter Gabriel to be honored
International music organization MIDEM will honor Peter Gabriel with its Personality of the Year Award at a gala dinner in Cannes, France on January 28. The solo artist and former Genesis frontman is being recognized for his music, as well as his work on innovative distribution methods for music in the digital age. Gabriel was cofounder of OD2 (On Demand Distribution), which became a leading European platform provider for the distribution of music online.
Gabriel's recent digital interests include theFilter.com, a music recommendation site that creates playlists and links to iTunes and other music stores. This year, Gabriel also cofounded We7, a Web Site that gives fans free downloads in exchange for a few seconds of advertising and enables artists to get paid.
"MIDEM has long been the central get together for the music business. I am honored to have been offered the Personality of the Year Award and look forward to coming down to Cannes in January 2008," Gabriel said in a statement.
Bobby Brown suffers heart attack
In a year that has seen his wife leave him and take their teenage daughter with her, 38-year-old Bobby Brown suffered another setback this week, spending a night in the hospital after suffering a mild heart attack, his attorney told the Associated Press. The beleaguered singer, who was divorced from Whitney Houston last year, had severe chest pains Tuesday night and was taken to two hospitals. He was admitted to Tarzana Regional Medical Center in the San Fernando Valley.
Attorney Phaedra Parks said the heart attack was attributed to stress and diet, and that Brown was released Wednesday morning in good condition. "He is in great spirits, he's doing very well," she said. "He's speaking with family members. He just wants the fans to know that he is definitely going to come back full speed ahead."
Prodigy gets three and a half years in jail
The Mobb won't be quite as Deep for the next few years. Rapper Prodigy, one half of the veteran rap duo Mobb Deep, pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a loaded gun this week in a deal that will put him behind bars for the next three and a half years. It was the rapper's third offense for the 32-year-old Queens native, who interrupted his trial in Manhattan Supreme Court to change his tune and admit owning the unlicensed .22-caliber pistol found in an armrest of his bulletproofed Chevy Suburban last October in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood.
Prodigy--real name Albert Johnson--was busted on the gun charge after cops stopped him for making an illegal U-turn on Ninth Avenue. Police said they found the gun in a compartment between his driver's seat and the front passenger seat, where hip-hop producer The Alchemist was sitting, the New York Daily News reported.
